2. Presentation Outline
• Open data, a worldwide phenomena
– Definition and scope
• Approaches to visualizing AQ data
– Crowdsouring?
• Emerging AQ sensor technologies
• Applications
– Virtual work bench
– Health notifications
4. Open Data Defined
• Data that is:
– Freely available
– With no restrictions
– That can be used, reused and distributed
• 200+ local, regional and national portals
exist.

5. How does open data work?
Researchers
Open Developers Consumers of the
Data Government ‘open data’ product.
Communities
13. Emerging AQ Monitors
(in a perfect world)
• Inexpensive
• Easily connects to the internet to:
– Provide real time data feeds
• The data is open
– Visualized in meaningful ways
– Apps are built via and API
• Tool to engage and build community
• Empowerment / Transparency / Engagement
21. Sensor Measurements
Sensor AQ Egg Cairpol
Parameters NO2 (0.05 – 5 ppm ) NO2 (0 – 1000 ppb)
Cost 155 USD 650 USD
Internet Yes Potentially
Power Plug-in Battery, plug-in, solar
GPS No No
Unknowns Tolerance for cold, sensor sensitivity, sensor drift,
ease of deployment / use
22. Challenges
• Purchasing
– Cairpol - 66 emails and 2 Skype calls to France…
– AQEgg was JUST shipped…it was promised in
August
• Deployment and testing of this new tech
• Defining tech limitations and strengths
• Not getting TOO ENTHUSIASTIC about
untried technology
• Others, not yet known.

In this instance, I can access and download the complete raw data set in a variety of formats so that I can mash these data with other data sets. For instance, I can mash traffic counts, with and City of Edmonton vehicle fleet data and use an algorithm from the EPAs Mobile 6 or Move platform to estimate vehicle emissions for each location. If I find errors with the data, I can discuss / provide feedback to the data owner. Within this model it is possible to create a community of super users who can help verify the data that are being posted.

3D renderings of the environment, and overlay a layer visualizing the AQ of an area. A time slider such that the user can access the time period that they want, and a menu that allows the user to visualize the desired data set. Not to mention the support of crow sourced data. In this model, the City of London has decided to move away from propaganda as communication, to engagement with their population.
Eye one earth is unique in that they allow for citizen contributions:
Finally the Copenhagen wheel is designed to take AQ monitoring to the street, literally in that MIT sees citizens as sensors, and are working to engage a population with the monitoring of their environment.
