Daktari Bush School & Wildlife Orphanage is an educational animal reserve located near the town of Hoedspruit in Limpopo Province, South Africa. Every Monday morning we welcome a new group of 8-10 underprivileged children from neighbouring communities who stay with us full board for 5 days. Over the course of the week the children receive our structured syllabus covering subjects from conservation, environment and pollution to social talks on drugs, alcohol, sex education and how to make South Africa a better place. All of the teaching is delivered by volunteers from all over the world who pay to experience Daktari and all it has to offer, as a registered NGO the majority of our funding is generated through our volunteers and we could not operate without their help. The Daktari reserve itself is home to a variety of rescued birds, animals and reptiles all of which are used to educate and inspire the children and volunteers who stay with us.

Daktari Newsletter September - October 2013
1. By Amy Hulme
Hello and welcome to my second edition of DAKTARI News!
My first 5 months as Marketing Volunteer at Daktari have flown by! The newsletter is
fast becoming one of my favourite projects as I get to reminisce and re-live the best
bits from the previous months…every day something new happens and Daktari life
blurs into one great day after the next. That said, the temperature is quickly rising
and creepy crawlies are quickly emerging – summer is upon us.
Please read on and enjoy my compilation of the best that September and October
2013 gave us.

2. DAKTARI TV STARS!
Between 18th September and 4th
October, Daktari welcomed a TV crew
from the popular French channel TF1.
Celia and Frederic produced a
documentary about Daktari which will
be aired anytime soon! Follow us on
facebook for the dates!
NEW CROCODILE CAMP!
Our young crocs, Molopo and
Tugela, were relocated to their new
enclosure! They love the new open
space and murky waters…hopefully
they will be big enough for release in
no time.

3. HALL ’OOOOO’ WEEN PARTY!
If you’ve been to a DAKTARI bonfire you’ll know
all about the rhythms, beats and dance moves.
Thursday 31st October had a spooky twist as the
kids and vols dressed in all sorts of
costumes, they sang and danced under the
moonlight with an eerie backdrop of an
approaching thunderstorm.
DASHING DASSIE HIDES!
Our Dassies have been very shy
since their arrival so we sent in a
team of hardworking volunteers
to build them some new hides in
their enclosure. They can now be
seen running around a lot more
often!

4. SHILOWENI’S ANNUAL CHECK-UP
Most of the time we leave our handsome
leopard to his own devices, but once a
year, for his own good, the vet Peter Rogers
puts him to sleep and checks on his state of
health. We were extremely pleased to hear
that his condition is superb and much better
than Peter himself expected.
The check-up also gave the volunteers, staff
and children a chance to see Shiloweni up
close - a once in a life time experience for
all.
We would like to say a big thank you to
Shiloweni’s sponsors who help us to provide
him with all that he needs

5. My name is Darling. I am the new puppy
around here! I was a bit scared after
leaving my home at the Holy Family
orphanage, but the other dogs are
starting to play with me now and Daktari
is a lovely new home. I like to play with
Gucci the most
I’m Freddy the squirrel. When I
realised there was a French journalist
from TF1 at Daktari I decided to slip
from my nest…the plan worked and
anytime now I will be famous! My new
mum Charlotte bottle fed me so well
that even now that I am free, I never
go far from the lapa
I am Maxi’s baby! My big sister
Mini also has a new baby and we
all look out for each other. Daktari
is still a bit scary for me, but my
mum says the people there are
very nice, they even give her a
baby’s bottle everyday! Maybe
when I’m big and brave I will go
there too…

8. HERITAGE DAY!
On the 24th September, the
children from Maahlamele EcoClub performed a wonderful
production in their village. The
traditional singing and dancing
was a celebration of their South
African heritage with a link to
conservation and saving the
environment.
We were so proud of them all
and encourage you to watch the
performances on our YouTube
