Cities such as Paris, London and Hamburg have integrated the setting up
of public-bicycles schemes in their long-term transport plans. Supporting
bicycle traffic is an attractive strategy: cycling infrastructure is inexpensive
compared to other public transport modes; and the promotion of cycling
increases the proportion of pollution-free, low-noise traffic. More cyclists
in cities also result in safer roads, since car drivers become more aware of
pedestrians and cyclists.
