this book. Please do not eat any thing unknown.
3. This story is dedicated to my
sister Hannah and My Dad,
Trevor, who I love and miss.
4. Well G'day every one, this is a story about bush tucker and a few experiences I
have had with it. Well, if you visit my blog (address on back page) you would have
noticed I am a fan of Bear Grylls. I have always liked the bush and when I saw
one of Bear Grylls's shows, I just thought he was awesome. Bear Grylls is a chief
scout and teaches how to survive if you get lost in all different places.
5. Now if you have seen one of Bear Grylls's shows he eats bugs and stuff. It looks
gross right? Bugs taste gross because I know from experience. There
are lots of bush foods that you can eat. There are bugs, fruit, plants, roots and
lots more. But as the warning says at the start of this story, eating stuff that is on
unknown is dangerous.
6. Before I eat stuff, I look up what you can eat. One of the things I have eaten are
termites. A lot of people think I am crazy because I eat termites all the time. I have
probably eaten about 40 termites so far. What do they taste like? Well they taste to
me like wood. (well no surprise, they eat wood!) I had one experience at a camp site
in Perth. I was trying to convince a friend to eat a termite so I suggested that I eat
one and then he eats one. So we walk around and found some rotting wood and
opened it up and there were some termites. I picked one up and tried to take it off
some wood. It bit it hard and I ended up ripping it apart. I thought that was a bit
funny but I picked up a another one, put it in my mouth and it bit my tongue! So my
tip for termites, bite it first don't just put it in your mouth!
7. The other thing I have eaten is a witchetty grub. It is the most foul meat I have
tasted, that’s if you can call it a meat. Its more just blood, guts and digested wood.
Well, if your wondering what is a witchetty grub, it is a long white bug that lives in
the ground and eats and lives in logs. Now normally if you you eat a witchetty grub
you would cook it. Well I was in the bush and I couldn’t cook it. I ate it raw. I cut
the head off (which is the worst thing you can do because all the guts and blood
come out) and put it in my mouth and chewed. It tastes like wood and guts. And
when I say wood I mean wood. So if you want to know what wood tastes like, eat
a witchetty Grub.
8. Now there is a bush fruit you can eat and it is called a lilly pilly. Now a lot of
people have lilly pillies in their yards. But you can occasionally find them out in
the wild. Now when you eat them make sure you don’t eat the seeds. They are
poisonous. A lot of people don’t like the taste of lilly pillies because you can get ones
that are sour. But I don't find them too bad.
9. Another plant that has a very handy use, is bracken fern. Now you can eat this
plant but you have do a lot of different things to be able eat. So don’t eat this
plant! Now the good use with this,it is you get bitten by a bull ant. What you do is get
the new shoots near the end of the bracken fern and break it up and rub it on
the bite. And it does work. We used it on my younger brother once. With in five
minutes he stopped crying.
