2. Cancer is one of the most serious medical conditions that
an individual can be diagnosed with. Is cancer curable is
one of the questions many individuals will ask
themselves and others. A look at the facts about cancer
should be able to help answer this question.
With the exception of a few types of cancer, the cause of
cancer is not known. The theory is that cancer is caused
by changes in the DNA of normal cells that are located in
various parts of the body. These cells may then become
abnormal due to the change in DNA. Sometimes these
cells will start to grow rapidly and in an uncontrolled
manner. For some reason the body has lost its ability to
control these abnormal cells from developing. These cells
will continue to grow and they will eventually form a
malignant tumor. It is this tumor that will start to
interfere with the organ or body part in a manner that
does not allow it to function normally.
3. So the process of how cancer develops is known, but the
problem is that with most cancers, scientists do not know
what triggers the changes in the cells' DNA in the first
place. Now there are some cancers where the cause is
known. For example, we know that two types of the
human papillomavirus (HPV) cause about 70% of all cases
of cervical cancer. It is important to understand that even
if a woman has been affected by this virus, it does not
mean that she will develop cervical cancer. Her immune
system might be effective in controlling the infection or
the cells in her cervix might never have cancer cells. One
thing that still eludes researchers is exactly how HPV
causes cancer to develop.
So the problem with curing cancer is that fact that the
actual cause has not been identified. Since researchers
do not know how it starts, they also do not know how to
keep it from starting. Because of this cancer is not truly
curable at this time. There are other facts that support
this claim.
4. As noted earlier, tumors are formed by abnormal that
multiply rapidly and uncontrollably. Research so far has
found that these abnormal changes in the cell are not
characterized by any specific symptoms. This leads to
one of the biggest problems with cancer is that it is not
diagnosed until the tumor has grown large enough to
affect the body part that it is located and then giving
some indication that it is present in the body.
Furthermore, the cancer symptoms that a sufferer might
experience are quite common, such as fatigue, pain in
the affected area of the body, indigestion or the
appearance of a mole on the skin. These symptoms are
easy to ignore or just to write off to some else that is
afflicting the body.
5. It is because of the fact that most individuals are not
treated early because of the lack of symptoms during the
early stages of cancer, that cancer treatment success can
be very difficult. The main treatment for cancer is to
surgically remove the tumor. The removal of tissue and
lymph nodes surrounding the tumor may also be
required depending how far the cancer has spread at the
time of diagnosis. If the cancer is real bad, it may require
the removal of the entire organ all though this is not
always possible if the organ is required for living. For
example, if both lungs were infected, it would not be
possible to remove both lungs. In the cases of the
gynecological cancers, the entire reproductive system of
the female patient is usually removed.
The other issue with curing cancer is that even if the
tumor is removed, it more likely that the patients may
remain disabled and/or seriously ill for the rest of their
lives. Also research indicates that there is a an increased
risk of dying after successful treatment of cancer and the
likelihood of living past five years is not as great as
someone who has not had cancer.
6. The good news is that modern treatment is getting
better all of the time and people are becoming more
aware of cancer and ways to help prevent or reduce its
risk. The key to effective cancer treatment is to diagnose
it in its early stages. If it is caught in its earlier stages
there is a greater likelihood of successful treatment and
to live a more normal life after the treatment is over.
One last point is that even if the cancer can be removed
and the abnormal cells killed by radiation or
chemotherapy, the individual is at a higher risk of getting
cancer in the future and should definitely do any
recommended screenings and be aware of any potential
cancer symptoms.
So the answer to the question of whether cancer is
curable is basically that at this time it is not fully curable.
However, research is ongoing and innovative methods
for treatment are constantly undergoing trials. One
example is the transplantation of stem cells, even though
this type of treatment is still experimental. Despite this,
patients and their relatives should be suspicious of any
people or clinics that promise certain curing.
