Avoir et être
Être is the verb which normally means “to be”
in English:
Avoir is the verb which normally means “to
have” in English:

Je suis malade. = I am ill. J’ai mal à la tête. = I have a headache.
Tu es fatigué. = You are tired. Tu as un frère. = You have a brother.
But sometimes in French they are used the other way round:
Il est enrhumé. = He has a cold. Il a 14 ans. = He is 14.
Il a soif. = He is thirsty.
