This document defines medical terms related to the nervous system, including suffixes that indicate paralysis (-plegia), pain or sensitivity (-algesia), speech disorders (-phasia), and sensation or feeling (-esthesia). It provides the meanings and examples for each term, such as hemiplegia meaning paralysis on one side of the body, analgesia reducing pain perception, aphasia impairing language abilities, and anesthesia reducing or blocking sensation.
2. -plegia Meaning: Paralysis; stroke EX. hemiplegia *paralysis on only one side of the body. The main cause of hemiplegia is brain damage as the result of disrupted blood flow and spinal cord injury
3. -algesia Meaning: Pain, and or sensitivity EX analgesia *A reduction in the perception of pain or sensation due to a neurological condition or medication
4. -phasia Meaning: a combining form used in the names of speech disorders EX aphasia *an impairment of language ability. This class of language disorder ranges from having difficulty remembering words to being completely unable to speak, read, or write. Aphasia disorders usually develop quickly as a result of head injury or stroke but can develop slowly from a brain tumor, infection, or dementia. The area and extent of brain damage determine the type of aphasia and its symptoms
5. -esthesia Meaning: Sensation or feeling; sensitivity EX anesthesia *Partial or complete loss of sensation with or without a loss of consciousness as a result of a drug, disease, or injury. Anesthesia is used to block nerve impulses so that the body and the brain can be desensitized to pain
