BEGINNING ANALYSIS
James bond 007 Quantum of Solace-04:31
At the start of this clip, there is a soundtrack playing in the background whichfeatures strings.
This helps to build up the tension before the audience are
introduced to bond. Next there is a long shot of a cliff, followed
by a shot of the side of bonds car, taking place in a dark
environment. This suggests that the chase will be important to
the outgoing of the plot, and could ultimately portray a dark
overlookof the rest of the film. Followedup we see another
close up shot of the outside of the tunnel, along with a change
in pitch of the soundtrack, whichsuggests that the chase is
about to begin. There is then several minute, distinctive shots
of bonds face the outside of the car and the area around him,
one of whichis a shot of the cars behind and who are shooting
at him, whichidentifies that these are the people who are
chasing him in this scene and another close up of sweat drops
running down his face, which adds tothe tension and
superstition the sequence originally gives, along with an aerial
shot of the car bonnet whichexpresses the classic overview of whatmakes bond whole, the
Aston Martin that he is driving. Throughout the chase there are a series of short cuts that add to
the intensity and sense of adrenalin that this sequence gives, as well as the classic backing
soundtrack of the bond theme, which suggests, like in every typicalbond sequence, he willcome
out on top.
Inception- 04:34
At the start of this sequence, there is a dramatic score playing in the background which features
lots of strings. This soundtrack helps to build tension before the audience are introduced to the
protagonist. As the music stops there is a hyperbolic sound of wavescrashing against rocks,
whichhelps to set the scene and it lets the audience aware that the film is set in present day.
The audience is then introduced to the protagonist whoseems to have wokenup on the shore.
Additionally there is another soundtrack playing and a P.O.Vshot to show the protagonist
looking at the children who are just figments of his imagination. The setting is then cut to the
interior of the antagonist’s base, which is a very traditional Chinese building which goes against
typicalconventions of a Sci Fi film. Furthermore, the props that are featured in the clip are
modern day type weapons whichagain contradict the conventions of a typicalSci Fi film.
Immediately the audience willbe asking questions: Whois the man that was in the water? Who
is the Chinese man? And what does the spinner represent? The scene suddenly jumps back in
time and the score stops, withno indication of how long ago, but the protagonist is there with
another Chinese man and it is set in the same room. This couldindicate that the future and past
participle of time play a big part to the plot of the movie, and could be time travel. The
characters talk about ‘the dream state’; this tells the audience that the film will be about dreams.
This suggests that the film might have a dark atmospheric feel to it. After the Chinese man
leaves the frame, the hyperbolic soundtrack is used forthe sound of Mr Cobb’s watchticking.
This suggests that the place they are in might not be reality. An explosion brings the scene into
2. another locationwhich lookslike an apocalyptic apartment, which may suggest that the current
location is reality and the alternate place is their dreaming state.
The Dark Knight-04:55
At the beginning there is a destabilising shot which is very tense, along with Hans Zimmer’s
ambient soundtrack, whichsuggests that something is about to happen. Following this there is a
breaking of the glass, along withthe view of a clownmask, reciprocates the suggestion that we
are witnessing the view of the antagonist. There is then another shot of a 10 second pan close up
of another replica mask, whichshows that the audience should be paying close attention to this
character. The hunched forwardposture of this character identifies that he is of an important
purpose in this scene. We then see the crew of clowns in the car, driving to their adjacent
destination. There is then a panning shot of a clowngetting out of the car and entering the again
makes the audience aware that this character is of a large importance to this sequence. The
clownon the rooftopgets taken out by another, indicating further more we are on the side of
the antagonists. There is then another shot of one of the clownsstrapping grenades to the
hostages, which shows that this character couldbe the Joker, whichis again cutto another
clownopening a vault. The scene is then cut back to the interior of the bank, with a clown
standing in the open and gets shot by the bank manager. The way the other clownin this cut
slides to coveris in a cartoonish, animated way.His suit is then exposed to the light whichis
shining through the ceiling and gives off a purple tone, further indicating the iconic suit that the
joker wears. This clownis then reunited with another as they retreat to another piece of cover,
and almost comically nods his head in an answer to the other clown’squestion along withhis
scarcity of speech, which couldfurther emphasise the personality of the Joker. After this clown
shoots the manager, there is the same tense music that is played at the beginning of this
sequence fades in, along with the characternodding in a menacing way, which shows that the
clownsare simple minded. When this clownfinally speaks in a follow up cut,the audience can
identify that this clownis in factthe joker. This is proven when he talks to the bank manager
whilst taking his mask off, whichreveals the iconic face of the Joker.
Blood and bone -02: 32
At the beginning we see a silhouette of someone walking against the sun, whichcould suggest
that this person could be the main protagonist, and could potentially be responsible forbringing
justice for the rest of the film. Shortly afterwards there are multiple close up angles of a group
of inmates walking and looking around, whichshows that they might be looking for someone in
particular. Following up from this, the camera cuts to a shot of twomen in the toilets, which
could potentially be the men that the previous group are looking for. Again, there is a cut to an
extreme close up of the two men, withthe one on the right turning towards the camera and
talking to the man on the left. However,he does not turn around towards him, as if in a normal
conversation, and there is a dark shadow coveringhis main facialfeatures, whichtogether
suggest that this man is of a particular importance to this film. As soon as they finish speaking,
the man on the right leaves and at the same time, the gang from the first few shots walkin to the
scene and immediately the man who is in front of the group pushes him away aggressively. This
proves that this gang are the antagonists to this scene and are there to fight the person whom
the audience does not know about. There is then a cuthowever to a close up of this unknown
man’s taking his shirt off,as well as a frontextreme closeup of his face, along with a heartbeat
sound effect, whichshows that he is getting in the zone and ready fora fight. After he turns
around and faces this main antagonist gang, there is a glimpse of a long shot of how they are all
scattered in the frame, whichsuggests that a big fight is about to occur. As soon as the fight
starts, there are various short, quick angles of the fight to add to the intensity and ferocity of the
attacks that are being given to this gang. All throughout this sequence, there is no backing track
3. playing, which suggests that this sequence is serious and of some importance to how the rest of
the film is played out, but on the other hand is not the main fighting sequence of the film.
