you wake up Saturday morning in your hotel room in Austin, Texas…really hungry. It’s your first time there and you are new to the area and you’re not sure what is around you or the best place to go for breakfast.
What are you going to type into Google to find a place that’s really good and that you can get to quickly because you are starting to get hangry? I’ll give you a few seconds to think about it!
Ok… so the majority of people are going to search “best breakfast in Austin”… some might also get super specific and include a neighborhood within Austin if you want something really close… or if you don’t have a rental car… “Breakfast restaurants on Rainey Street/downtown Austin/South Congress”

Another piece that most SEO DIY-ers and even SEO professionals miss is to determine if your keywords align with the searchers intent.
What I mean by search intent, is that people type something into Google to reach a specific goal… maybe to buy something… maybe to just research… Google is the most knowledgeable about their consumers so that is how you are going to research if your keywords align with search intent
I’m going to show you a few examples:
Phoenix Lawyer vs. Phoenix divorce laywers
Best Phoenix Lawyers vs. Top Phoenix Lawyer
Electric Scooter vs. wide tire electric scooter
If you try to optimize for a keyword that does not align with search intent you are wasting your time!!! Google’s #1 job is to make its consumers happy and how they do that is to present information to them that they WANT to see! So don’t think that you are going to go in there and bid on electric scooter when your product is not something like what is shown when you type it in. NOW intent might change over the years and that’s why we always go back and reoptimize, but in the near future it most likely will not change, and your website will not change that. That is out of your control and you just have to roll with the punches and move on to the next keyword.
