An abstract for a unit on cellular functions

1. Abstract
The big idea for the unit is for students to understand energy production and
absorption. They will learn through two WebQuests, YouTube videos, discussions and labs.
The YouTube videos are mainly used to either review a topic or spark interest in a new
topic. After learning the content, students will demonstrate their understanding by creating
a robot to represent one of the processes. The robots will be constructed out of recyclable
material and will conduct some sort of movement. In order to supplement their learning,
students will also use social media resources like Facebook, Twitter and Zello to share in
their learning experience with others. Students will keep a science notebook online by
blogging about each lab that is performed in class. There are some opportunities for extra
credit built into the unit. One of which is logging on to the class website and doing some
basic research on the plant posted there. Another extra credit opportunity is winning the
Jeopardy review game. Students will be evaluated on their two WebQuest assessments, lab,
robots, and their compare/contrast essay.
