HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE
COMBINATION OF YOUR MAIN
PRODUCT AND ANCILLARY
TEXTS?
Within the marketing of a product, it is important to link different elements of the
marketing campaign together to successfully promote the main product. The film
poster must link to the main product, so the audience can easily identify the film if the
saw the film poster. For example if a film poster didn’t looked different to a magazine
cover based on the same film, the audience could get easily confused about what
the film is actually about because the style would be different.
This is why I have made sure I have linked my products as this would enable the
audience who engage in the campaign to gain a clear picture of what the product
is about and what it offers because of recurring elements such as:
• Fonts
• Styles
• Themes
• Images
This would allow the audience to link the ancillary products towards the film trailer
and make the marketing successful.
MISE-EN-SCENE
Within the mise-en-scene I have made sure that the
costumes are linked, because the costume is used as an
effective way to shows the characters representation as the
protagonist is portrayed in casual/normal but dark clothing in
both the trailer and the magazine front cover which
connotes the idea that because he is in normal everyday
clothing this shows the reality out of his reality vs imagination
split personality. This also put emphasis on the props and
location more because he is out of depth in the isolated
locations and the events which are revealing. This costume
contrasts between other antagonists presented in the trailer
as they are wearing more brighter coloured clothing which
symbolises a bright and full healthy mental state. The way he
isn’t wearing a costume in the film poster shows that nothing
else but what is in his mind is important but instead the low
key lighting links with the dark clothing to show a darkness
feel off al three products.
MISE-EN-SCENE CONTINUED…
• All location shown in all three products is off a
mysterious, unknown and vague setting. This
creates to the mysterious nature of the film as
shows a brand identity being brought across all
products.
• The use of props within the products is shown
consistently between the trailer and the magazine
front cover, for example throughout the trailer a
knife is used, and in the image of the front cover
the protagonist is holding up a knife. This allows
the film to look violent and dangerous which links
which is conventional to the themes of the genre.
FONTS AND LANGUAGE

Film Poster

The font for the main title is mainly the same, the magazine front cover and
the film poster both have the same font to indicate and show a brand
identity which helps the audience to be able to remember the product
easily. Although the trailer has a different font it is very similar, both fonts
maintain the same bold sans serif font style and all of a bright red colour.
The two different fonts both represent a sense of anger and aggression
which would be conveyed on all three products to link this with what the
film is actually about and how that is aggressive.
The language conveyed in the strapline of the film poster and the on-screen
text shown within the trailer is related well to the style represented as they
both speak to the audience and have some short, snappy sentence to get
the audience thinking and involved in the thinking process of the trailer. This
technique makes the audience think more deeply about what they are
viewing and would encourage more thought to what film is being
presented which could urge the viewer to want to see the film.
This is known as an elaboration likelihood model as the key to successful
persuasion in media was whether or not an individual was motivated to
elaborate on a particular message. When people receive a persuasive
communication they think about the content of the message and therefore
people are motivated to analyse the content of the message, which my
products are attempting to do.
PHOTOGRAPHY

Trailer

I related the cinematography in my trailer to the
photography of both of my ancillary products. The image
on the magazine front cover is a scene with the trailer
when he is walking down a mysterious alleyway with a
knife. Also the photography included in the film poster is
included in the cinematography of the trailer This is of a
image of a close-up of the protagonists face. The
cinematography and photography of this close-up
represents the protagonists superiority, and making a
combined representation of the conventional killer on all
three of the products is more effective than just on one
product. This creates a brand identity because if the
audience watched the trailer, and then saw the other two
products they would be to easily relate these to the trailer
and would be able to help remember more. This similar
style between products represents clearly the genre whilst
also bringing across a distinguishable style and identity to
the film.
REPRESENTATION OF GENRE AND
CONTENT
I wanted to obtain a clear representation of the Psychological Thriller genre by
making it clear to the audience what the nature of the product is. All three of
my products bring across the protagonist is dangerous, has a state of peril, and
confused, which allows the representation of the film to be mysterious, and
conventional to the genre. The trailer represents the protagonist as dangerous
by having scenes where he is about to kill someone and holding a knife and
other weapons. This prop if also presented in the magazine front cover also, the
film poster makes the actor look dangerous as you can only see the face of the
protagonist and around is very low key lighting which gives a sense that he is
hiding something behind the darkness.
The strapline on the film poster ‘two minds trapped in one body’ gives a sense of
a split personality which therefore suggests a state of mental illness, which is also
presented through the image as just the head of the protagonist is shown which
suggests that the mind is affected. The trailer also represents the state of peril
whether protagonist is writing on the wall, also looses his control and kicks the
fence and also the protagonist has hallucinations.
The magazine also promotes how it will reveal more about the character who is
briefly shown in the trailer, because he Is on the large central image.

How effective is the combination of your main Product and the Ancillary Tasks

  • 1. HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE COMBINATION OF YOUR MAIN PRODUCT AND ANCILLARY TEXTS?
  • 2. Within the marketing of a product, it is important to link different elements of the marketing campaign together to successfully promote the main product. The film poster must link to the main product, so the audience can easily identify the film if the saw the film poster. For example if a film poster didn’t looked different to a magazine cover based on the same film, the audience could get easily confused about what the film is actually about because the style would be different. This is why I have made sure I have linked my products as this would enable the audience who engage in the campaign to gain a clear picture of what the product is about and what it offers because of recurring elements such as: • Fonts • Styles • Themes • Images This would allow the audience to link the ancillary products towards the film trailer and make the marketing successful.
  • 3. MISE-EN-SCENE Within the mise-en-scene I have made sure that the costumes are linked, because the costume is used as an effective way to shows the characters representation as the protagonist is portrayed in casual/normal but dark clothing in both the trailer and the magazine front cover which connotes the idea that because he is in normal everyday clothing this shows the reality out of his reality vs imagination split personality. This also put emphasis on the props and location more because he is out of depth in the isolated locations and the events which are revealing. This costume contrasts between other antagonists presented in the trailer as they are wearing more brighter coloured clothing which symbolises a bright and full healthy mental state. The way he isn’t wearing a costume in the film poster shows that nothing else but what is in his mind is important but instead the low key lighting links with the dark clothing to show a darkness feel off al three products.
  • 4. MISE-EN-SCENE CONTINUED… • All location shown in all three products is off a mysterious, unknown and vague setting. This creates to the mysterious nature of the film as shows a brand identity being brought across all products. • The use of props within the products is shown consistently between the trailer and the magazine front cover, for example throughout the trailer a knife is used, and in the image of the front cover the protagonist is holding up a knife. This allows the film to look violent and dangerous which links which is conventional to the themes of the genre.
  • 5. FONTS AND LANGUAGE Trailer Front cover Film Poster The font for the main title is mainly the same, the magazine front cover and the film poster both have the same font to indicate and show a brand identity which helps the audience to be able to remember the product easily. Although the trailer has a different font it is very similar, both fonts maintain the same bold sans serif font style and all of a bright red colour. The two different fonts both represent a sense of anger and aggression which would be conveyed on all three products to link this with what the film is actually about and how that is aggressive. The language conveyed in the strapline of the film poster and the on-screen text shown within the trailer is related well to the style represented as they both speak to the audience and have some short, snappy sentence to get the audience thinking and involved in the thinking process of the trailer. This technique makes the audience think more deeply about what they are viewing and would encourage more thought to what film is being presented which could urge the viewer to want to see the film. This is known as an elaboration likelihood model as the key to successful persuasion in media was whether or not an individual was motivated to elaborate on a particular message. When people receive a persuasive communication they think about the content of the message and therefore people are motivated to analyse the content of the message, which my products are attempting to do.
  • 6. PHOTOGRAPHY Film Poster Trailer I related the cinematography in my trailer to the photography of both of my ancillary products. The image on the magazine front cover is a scene with the trailer when he is walking down a mysterious alleyway with a knife. Also the photography included in the film poster is included in the cinematography of the trailer This is of a image of a close-up of the protagonists face. The cinematography and photography of this close-up represents the protagonists superiority, and making a combined representation of the conventional killer on all three of the products is more effective than just on one product. This creates a brand identity because if the audience watched the trailer, and then saw the other two products they would be to easily relate these to the trailer and would be able to help remember more. This similar style between products represents clearly the genre whilst also bringing across a distinguishable style and identity to the film.
  • 7. REPRESENTATION OF GENRE AND CONTENT I wanted to obtain a clear representation of the Psychological Thriller genre by making it clear to the audience what the nature of the product is. All three of my products bring across the protagonist is dangerous, has a state of peril, and confused, which allows the representation of the film to be mysterious, and conventional to the genre. The trailer represents the protagonist as dangerous by having scenes where he is about to kill someone and holding a knife and other weapons. This prop if also presented in the magazine front cover also, the film poster makes the actor look dangerous as you can only see the face of the protagonist and around is very low key lighting which gives a sense that he is hiding something behind the darkness. The strapline on the film poster ‘two minds trapped in one body’ gives a sense of a split personality which therefore suggests a state of mental illness, which is also presented through the image as just the head of the protagonist is shown which suggests that the mind is affected. The trailer also represents the state of peril whether protagonist is writing on the wall, also looses his control and kicks the fence and also the protagonist has hallucinations. The magazine also promotes how it will reveal more about the character who is briefly shown in the trailer, because he Is on the large central image.
