Participant’s Name:
Glenn Vickers II

Organization name:
Boys & Girls Club of Manassas

Region:
Boys & Girls Club Greater Washington

Date and location of the Management Advanced Leadership Program:
December 7 – 9, 2010

   1. Project Title:
“Serving Those That Need Us Most – Recruiting Georgetown South Community”

   2. Project Goal Statement:
To increase Club membership of Georgetown South residents by enrolling 12
children from that community by February 28th 2010

   3. Was the project goal met?

         Yes

      Comments:

It’s our daily mission to tell the world about this wonderful place we call a “CLUB.”
I am still amazed in the number of people that didn’t even know we existed right
in their back yard. As long as we package our information properly for the
community and follow through with our promises, our work will continue on for
years to come. This is why this project is so important to me.
4. Project Objectives: (List objectives only, Not the RASI form)

Objectives Met Not Met If not met, why?
1. Structure facility usage to reflect YES
communities needs.

2. Create age appropriate schedules to organize YES
the club by Day Care, Membership and
Athletics.

3. Create a bilingual identity by way of 1) flyer YES
2) phone extension 3) staffing

4. Build a partnership with 3 networks of YES
professionals or community enthusiast that
directly influence change in the Hispanic
community in and around Georgetown South.

    5. What were the major accomplishments and successes of your project?

Training new staff and watching how quickly they bought into the “greater good” of what
the Club is all about. I prefer to explain the big picture to my staff, so they understand
that what I ask is of substance and purpose. Once they clearly understood this project,
their efforts tripled our efforts.

    6. If applicable, what were some of your challenges meeting the project goal
and objectives? How did you overcome some of those challenges?

Day to day operations will continue to be the challenge. However, those same
challenges are the reason why our profession is so rewarding. Between extreme
weather, parent issues or facility damages, there will always be hurdles. Keeping my
objective “visible” daily helped keep me on target to complete my task. Visual aids in a
prominent locations helped.

   7. What impact did your project have on Club members?
The additional structure of programs and consistency in programs/staff in my
observation has forced our members to reach for more within themselves. Looking
forward to planned events brings excitement to a facility that should always be there.
Also, the new members that are registering to our club daily have brought new faces,
energy and personalities to the already diverse Club population.
8. What impact did your project have on the organization?
My project impacted our organization by clearly educating our community of what we
do and our mission. Our mission should be at the forefront of our operations,
especially when grooming new partnerships. New Club supporters need to believe
our conviction and feel the emotional story we paint when explaining our purpose.

   9. Leading Self: What personal changes have you made based on the 360
feedback you received at this program that resulted in making you a better
        leader?

           a. What are you doing more of:
Slowing myself down and allowing my staff enough time to execute the plans that
were given to them. Coming into this position is October; I see all of the potential of my
Club and what we should be to our children. I’ve managed large facilities and off-sites
for years. However, I remind myself that it took time to get everything on track for those
sites.

          b. What are you doing less of:
By evaluating all of the staffs goals and daily output, I am doing less programmatic
development. I’m focusing more of my time strategically planning for the business of the
Club. However I’m still a true believer that without a strong program base, I am only
doing us a disservice asking for community help if you don’t follow through. If my branch
can not deliver the services we promise, how I can develop our financial outlook.

            c. What are you continuing:
I continue to work everyday with a sense of urgency and purpose. In addition, I stay
grounded by always being able to “PLAY.” We are in youth development careers for a
reason. I will not forget why and that’s the reason why I choose to smile every day. By
working with Georgetown South and spending time within that community we serve, I
will not stray far away from there needs.

           d. What do you still need to work on?

I want to become an “real” expert in the Boys & Girls Club movement. We have a
tendency to get caught up in the business of running a Club. I’d like to stay on task and
complete more of the online Boys & Girls Club professional training and attend
conferences to better equip myself with a large degree of Boys & Girls Club knowledge.
In addition to my basic knowledge, I still need to SLOW DOWN just a bit.
10. Leading Self: Share a specific example of how the changes you made in
yourself had a positive effect on you and others:

Since my training back in December I’ve been very conscious in taking the time to
“write out” my goals and have them clearly labeled to others. I made the investment
in purchasing small white boards throughout my Club. When I start a campaign, I
now provide a visual for the rest of the team to see. A daily assessment of my daily
output towards my goal determines to me if I had a productive day.

   11. Leading Others: How have you become more of a “transformational leader”?

I’ve always used the perspectives of a cautious parent or the nervousness of a
child’s 1st tour of our Club. When I ask certain things from my staff, especially
dealing with the “Member Experience”, transforming their mindset into the groups I
mentioned before is key. After going through this training, I’m much more deliberate
in conveying the emotional buy in that I need from everyone. So when recruiting in a
area where we don’t have our trust yet, placing themselves in this communities
shoes tells a important story of how we service them.

   12. How have you implemented GRPI? How did you make sure your team
understood the GOALS, ROLES, PROCESS and Interpersonal Relationships?

Without being too technical, I have used most if not all of the grids that were given to
us for this training. By using those very simple handouts, there is no mis-interruption.
Having everything in writing keeps a very clean checks and balance for employee
   reviews.

   13. Team Engagement: How did you involve others in achieving the project goals
       and objectives?

I kept everyone’s responsibilities very simple. All of my staff has a vested interest to
the success of their programs. The point that has been reinforced is that the success of
one program is the success of all. My project revolved around the active recruitment of
Georgetown South, without quality programs there can’t be recruitment without
retention. They understand that now and they are working daily to ensure we
are…...creating a positive place for kids.
14. Other comments about your learning experience:

Taking the time to sit down without distraction is important to setting goals. My strategic
planning can not take place without making “self time” a priority. I’ve accomplished a lot
and I’m looking forward to doing more using the tools that were given to me.

Mg project finalization form glenn vickers(2)

  • 1. Management - Advanced Leadership Program Phase III: Project Finalization Form Please complete this form and return by email to ccorrado@bgca.org and aayala@bgca.org on or before March 8, 2010. Participant’s Name: Glenn Vickers II Organization name: Boys & Girls Club of Manassas Region: Boys & Girls Club Greater Washington Date and location of the Management Advanced Leadership Program: December 7 – 9, 2010 1. Project Title: “Serving Those That Need Us Most – Recruiting Georgetown South Community” 2. Project Goal Statement: To increase Club membership of Georgetown South residents by enrolling 12 children from that community by February 28th 2010 3. Was the project goal met? Yes Comments: It’s our daily mission to tell the world about this wonderful place we call a “CLUB.” I am still amazed in the number of people that didn’t even know we existed right in their back yard. As long as we package our information properly for the community and follow through with our promises, our work will continue on for years to come. This is why this project is so important to me.
  • 2. 4. Project Objectives: (List objectives only, Not the RASI form) Objectives Met Not Met If not met, why? 1. Structure facility usage to reflect YES communities needs. 2. Create age appropriate schedules to organize YES the club by Day Care, Membership and Athletics. 3. Create a bilingual identity by way of 1) flyer YES 2) phone extension 3) staffing 4. Build a partnership with 3 networks of YES professionals or community enthusiast that directly influence change in the Hispanic community in and around Georgetown South. 5. What were the major accomplishments and successes of your project? Training new staff and watching how quickly they bought into the “greater good” of what the Club is all about. I prefer to explain the big picture to my staff, so they understand that what I ask is of substance and purpose. Once they clearly understood this project, their efforts tripled our efforts. 6. If applicable, what were some of your challenges meeting the project goal and objectives? How did you overcome some of those challenges? Day to day operations will continue to be the challenge. However, those same challenges are the reason why our profession is so rewarding. Between extreme weather, parent issues or facility damages, there will always be hurdles. Keeping my objective “visible” daily helped keep me on target to complete my task. Visual aids in a prominent locations helped. 7. What impact did your project have on Club members? The additional structure of programs and consistency in programs/staff in my observation has forced our members to reach for more within themselves. Looking forward to planned events brings excitement to a facility that should always be there. Also, the new members that are registering to our club daily have brought new faces, energy and personalities to the already diverse Club population.
  • 3. 8. What impact did your project have on the organization? My project impacted our organization by clearly educating our community of what we do and our mission. Our mission should be at the forefront of our operations, especially when grooming new partnerships. New Club supporters need to believe our conviction and feel the emotional story we paint when explaining our purpose. 9. Leading Self: What personal changes have you made based on the 360 feedback you received at this program that resulted in making you a better leader? a. What are you doing more of: Slowing myself down and allowing my staff enough time to execute the plans that were given to them. Coming into this position is October; I see all of the potential of my Club and what we should be to our children. I’ve managed large facilities and off-sites for years. However, I remind myself that it took time to get everything on track for those sites. b. What are you doing less of: By evaluating all of the staffs goals and daily output, I am doing less programmatic development. I’m focusing more of my time strategically planning for the business of the Club. However I’m still a true believer that without a strong program base, I am only doing us a disservice asking for community help if you don’t follow through. If my branch can not deliver the services we promise, how I can develop our financial outlook. c. What are you continuing: I continue to work everyday with a sense of urgency and purpose. In addition, I stay grounded by always being able to “PLAY.” We are in youth development careers for a reason. I will not forget why and that’s the reason why I choose to smile every day. By working with Georgetown South and spending time within that community we serve, I will not stray far away from there needs. d. What do you still need to work on? I want to become an “real” expert in the Boys & Girls Club movement. We have a tendency to get caught up in the business of running a Club. I’d like to stay on task and complete more of the online Boys & Girls Club professional training and attend conferences to better equip myself with a large degree of Boys & Girls Club knowledge. In addition to my basic knowledge, I still need to SLOW DOWN just a bit.
  • 4. 10. Leading Self: Share a specific example of how the changes you made in yourself had a positive effect on you and others: Since my training back in December I’ve been very conscious in taking the time to “write out” my goals and have them clearly labeled to others. I made the investment in purchasing small white boards throughout my Club. When I start a campaign, I now provide a visual for the rest of the team to see. A daily assessment of my daily output towards my goal determines to me if I had a productive day. 11. Leading Others: How have you become more of a “transformational leader”? I’ve always used the perspectives of a cautious parent or the nervousness of a child’s 1st tour of our Club. When I ask certain things from my staff, especially dealing with the “Member Experience”, transforming their mindset into the groups I mentioned before is key. After going through this training, I’m much more deliberate in conveying the emotional buy in that I need from everyone. So when recruiting in a area where we don’t have our trust yet, placing themselves in this communities shoes tells a important story of how we service them. 12. How have you implemented GRPI? How did you make sure your team understood the GOALS, ROLES, PROCESS and Interpersonal Relationships? Without being too technical, I have used most if not all of the grids that were given to us for this training. By using those very simple handouts, there is no mis-interruption. Having everything in writing keeps a very clean checks and balance for employee reviews. 13. Team Engagement: How did you involve others in achieving the project goals and objectives? I kept everyone’s responsibilities very simple. All of my staff has a vested interest to the success of their programs. The point that has been reinforced is that the success of one program is the success of all. My project revolved around the active recruitment of Georgetown South, without quality programs there can’t be recruitment without retention. They understand that now and they are working daily to ensure we are…...creating a positive place for kids.
  • 5. 14. Other comments about your learning experience: Taking the time to sit down without distraction is important to setting goals. My strategic planning can not take place without making “self time” a priority. I’ve accomplished a lot and I’m looking forward to doing more using the tools that were given to me.
