Why do we present at all? What should now be clear is that presenting is not just making the slides and talking through them and sitting down. Things like trying to get questions asked and answering them are as important and one of the main reasons why we present. A good question is why do we present? Why not just write documents? Advantages Disadvantages
What is the purpose of a presentation To convey information to an audience about your chosen subject

Also each presentation has a specific purpose or maybe a “goal” is a better word for it.. for instance...

What is my purpose today My purpose today would seem to be talking about how I present and what I think is important to consider when presenting but really I have a different purpose I want to try and convince you that presenting is a skill not a tool. Its elements need to be understood as a skill. If you do not learn how to present in its four different ways (which I will talk about later), you are not doing a professional job of presenting your work and the audience will leave with a more negative impression. Presenting Presenting
Is style important Yes it is very important but in general style is used as a general all encompassing positive only term. There is such a thing as bad style but most people just say that everyone develops their own style, this idea has to be challenged. We need a way of figuring out objectively if the style is good or bad
How to analyse a presentation Speech (What you say and how you say it) Structure (organisation, emphasis, depth, transitions) Visual aids (slides, using a chalk board, visual emphasis, demonstrations, videos) Delivery (interaction with the audience, eye contact, gestures...)
Speech Speech (What you say and how you say it) Targeting your audience Who are they? How technical are they? If you target the wrong audience the words you use will be incomprehensible and you will fail to convey the information to the audience Use of analogies (helps with general comprehension) Use of examples (helps with general comprehension) Use of stories as well (helps to relax the audience) Connecting with the audience (keeps the audiences interest) Use of humour (helps to relax the audience) Backing up what you say - Appeals to logic Appeals to emotion Appeals to character

Structure Now I’m going to talk a little bit about structure. Starting with the organisation of a presentation.
Organising a presentation

Choices about content in presentation Choice 1) Wide scope Scope

Choices about content in presentation Choice 1) Wide scope – Shallow Depth Scope Depth Choice 2) Narrow scope – Broad Depth Scope Depth
Choices about content in presentation Choice 1) Wide scope – Shallow Depth You can’t have a Wide scope and a Broad depth in a presentation. Choosing you content to match the scope and depth is imperative and the choice of content is also driven by the audience. Scope Depth Choice 2) Narrow scope – Broad Depth Scope Depth
Why have outline slides? What is the purpose of the slide below? Nearly everyone who presents has slides like this littered through the presentation but why?
They facilitate transitions ,[object Object]
So that the audience knows when you’ve finished with a topic
Also so they know what is coming next
It also allows you to emphasise the important part of the presentation.,[object Object]

Isn’t this all just common sense? Yes of course it is but things seem like common sense when they are logical and easily understandable. Just because its common sense does not mean people follow it. I haven’t covered the four parts of presenting as I see them as they are each would require a long talk. I hope that I have convinced people that there is a need to research how to present. That just standing up and doing it and that implicit learning is not enough.
