GLOBAL WARMING STOP
What is global warming? ,[object Object]
Nowadays, we've overloaded the atmosphere with heat-trapping gasses from our cars and factories and power plants. If we don't start fixing the problem now, we’re in for devastating changes to our environment. We will experience extreme temperatures, rises in sea levels, and storms of unimaginable destructive fury. ,[object Object]
How Do Humans Contribute to Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Global Warming? Human activity has been a major contributor to climate change since the start of the Industrial in the mid-1700s.
EFFECTS OF GLOBAL WARMING 1 Rise in sea levels worldwide Scientists predict an increase in sea levels worldwide due to the melting of two massive ice sheets in Antarctica and Greenland, especially on the East coast of the U.S. However, many nations around the world will experience the effects of rising sea levels, which could displace millions of people. One nation, the Maldives, is already looking for a new home, thanks to rising sea levels.
EFFECTS OF GLOBAL WARMING 2 More killer storm The severity of storms such as hurricanes and cyclones is increasing. Scientists have come up with the firmest evidence so far that global warming will significantly increase the intensity of the most extreme storms worldwide. The maximum wind speeds of the strongest tropical cyclones have increased significantly since 1981.And the upward trend, thought to be driven by rising ocean temperatures, is unlikely to stop at any time soon.
EFFECTS OF GLOBAL WARMING 3 Massive crop failures Climate change is expected to have the most severe impact on water supplies. Shortages in future are likely to threaten food production, reduce sanitation, hinder economic development and damage ecosystems. It causes more violent swings between floods and droughts. - Guardian: Global warming causes 300,000 deaths a year.
EFFECTS OF GLOBAL WARMING 4 Widespread extinction of species According to research published in Nature, by 2050, rising temperatures could lead to the extinction of more than a million species. “Climate change now represents at least as great a threat to the number of species surviving on Earth as habitat-destruction and modification.”Chris Thomas, conservation biologist at the University of Leeds
EFFECTS OF GLOBAL WARMING 5 Disappearance of coral reefs A report on coral reefs from WWF says that in a worst case scenario, coral populations will collapse by 2100 due to increased temperatures and ocean acidification. The ‘bleaching’ of corals from small but prolonged rises in sea temperature is a severe danger for ocean ecosystems, and many other species in the oceans rely on coral reefs for their survival.
STOP GLOBAL WARMING Use Compact Fluorescent Bulbs Replace 3 frequently used light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs. Save 300 lbs. of carbon dioxide and $60 per year. Inflate Your Tires Keep the tires on your car adequately inflated. Check them monthly. Save 250 lbs. of carbon dioxide and $840 per year. Change Your Air Filter Check your car's air filter monthly. Save 800 lbs. of carbon dioxide and $130 per year. Fill the Dishwasher Run your dishwasher only with a full load. Save 100 lbs. of carbon dioxide and $40 per year. Use Recycled Paper Make sure your printer paper is 100% post consumer recycled paper. Save 5 lbs. of carbon dioxide per ream of paper.
STOP GLOBAL WARMING Change the AC Filter Clean or replace dirty air conditioner filters as recommended. Save 350 lbs. of carbon dioxide and $150 per year. Buy Products Locally Buy locally and reduce the amount of energy required to drive your products to your store. Buy Energy Certificates Help spur the renewable energy market and cut global warming pollution by buying wind certificates and green tags. Buy Minimally Packaged Goods Less packaging could reduce your garbage by about 10%. Save 1,200 pounds of carbon dioxide and $1,000 per year. Buy a Fuel Efficient Car Getting a few extra miles per gallon makes a big difference. Save thousands of lbs. of CO2 and a lot of money per year.
STOP GLOBAL WARMING Carpool When You Can Own a big vehicle? Carpooling with friends and co-workers saves fuel. Save 790 lbs. of carbon dioxide and hundreds of dollars per year. Don't Idle in Your Car Idling wastes money and gas, and generates pollution and global warming causing emissions. Except when in traffic, turn your engine off if you must wait for more than 30 seconds. Reduce Garbage Buy products with less packaging and recycle paper, plastic and glass. Save 1,000 lbs. of carbon dioxide per year. Plant a Tree Trees suck up carbon dioxide and make clean air for us to breathe. Save 2,000 lbs. of carbon dioxide per year. Unplug Un-Used Electronics Even when electronic devices are turned off, they use energy. Save over 1,000 lbs of carbon dioxide and $256 per year.
