2. What is a portal?
An enterprise portal creates a common
gateway to access data and services that
campus constituents use to effectively share
information, efficiently deliver services, and foster
collaboration. (Matthew Coombs, Director of
Systems Development at San Joaquin Delta
College)
3. Differences from the
Canisius College Web Site
(www.canisius.edu)
myCanisius is targeted toward specific Canisius
College audiences
myCanisius will display different information
depending on your “role”
Role initially developed: student
Soon: faculty and staff

Customized interface for individuals based on their
preferences
Content management
5. Portal Adoption in Higher Ed
Campus Pipeline, a portal vendor that integrated
with Banner, was a factor in Canisius selecting
Banner in 2000. Campus Pipeline was “free”, and
the Banner team (and many others outside
Canisius) concluded that you get what you pay
for..
2002-Campus Pipeline purchased by SCT and
becomes Luminis. Luminis was not free.
Estimated first year cost: $500,000
Portals widely adopted in higher ed: in Fall
2009, over 80% of private universities had a
portal or had one under development (Campus
Computing 2009).
6. CampusEAI Grant Program
CampusEAI is a consortium of over 250 higher
education institutions that focuses on portal and
related technologies.
Canisius College awarded $1,027,500 in goods
and services over a five year period toward
implementation of MyCampus.
The College share will be $30,000/year.
