5. Introduction:
 Hypnosis is "a trance state characterisized by
extreme suggestibility, relaxation and
heightened imagination
 Derived from the term
neuro-hypnotism
(nervous sleep)
by
James braid

6. Definition:
 Earlier definition was given by James
braid.
 He later elaborated this brief definition in
his work "hypnotic therapeutics" in 1853.

7. Braid later ,in his The physiology of fascination
substituted the term "monodeism ".

8. Induction:
It is defined as means of heightening client
expectations ,defining their role focusing attention

9. Suggestion:
It is sub divided into following parts
 Consciousness vs unconscious mind
 Ideo-dynamic reflex
 Post hypnotic suggestion

10. Consciousness vs
Unconsciousness:
 Hypnotists view 'suggestion' as a means of
communicating with the "unconscious" or
"conscious" mind.

11. Ideo-dynamic reflex:
 Braid adopted his friend William carpenter's
theory of ideo-motor reflex response to
account for the phenomenon of hypnotism

 It has been alleged post-hypnotic suggestion
can be used to change people's behaviour
after emerging from hypnosis.

o FICTION: When your under hypnosis you
surrender your free will.
o FACT: Hypnosis is a heighten state of
concentration and focus. When your under
hypnosis you DO NOT lose your
personality, free-will, or personal strength.
o FICTION: When your under hypnosis the
therapist controls you.
o FACT: You do hypnotherapy only FOR
YOURSELF. A hypnotherapist serves only as a
guide or facilitator.
o FICTION: You can be put under hypnosis
without your consent.
o FACT: Successful hypnosis depends on your
willingness to experience it—even with
voluntary hypnosis, not everyone can be led
into a hypnotic state.
