Why does it make sense to incorporate various uses of technology into teaching a unit
on telling time?

Technology helps promote a positive shift towards more project
based, hands on learning, and away from lecture based
teaching.
Learning how to tell time can be made much richer and
engaging by helping students explore clocks with the aid of
technology.
This presentation shows how teachers can integrate technology
such as the SMART board, instructional videos, podcasts, online
games, and educational apps into a unit on telling time to
overall build a responsive classroom.

What is gained/added by integrating technology into the teaching a unit on telling
time?

Engagement: Using technology involves students in the learning
process. Students using technology become active in the
learning process instead of passive listeners.
Access to Information/Communication: The Internet provides
access to a variety of informational sources, media, and
communications.
Differentiation: Technology provides greater opportunities for
differentiation for students. Computers targeted at multimedia
applications showing pictures, sounds, and videos are beneficial
to the learning styles of various learners.

sources of information and are related to teaching and learning
how to tell time.

  • 1. What TIME is it? 1st Grade Unit Caitlin McGowan Spring 2014
  • 2. •Technology Integration Rationale Why does it make sense to incorporate various uses of technology into teaching a unit on telling time? • • • Technology helps promote a positive shift towards more project based, hands on learning, and away from lecture based teaching. Learning how to tell time can be made much richer and engaging by helping students explore clocks with the aid of technology. This presentation shows how teachers can integrate technology such as the SMART board, instructional videos, podcasts, online games, and educational apps into a unit on telling time to overall build a responsive classroom.
  • 3. •Technology Integration Rationale What is gained/added by integrating technology into the teaching a unit on telling time? • • • Engagement: Using technology involves students in the learning process. Students using technology become active in the learning process instead of passive listeners. Access to Information/Communication: The Internet provides access to a variety of informational sources, media, and communications. Differentiation: Technology provides greater opportunities for differentiation for students. Computers targeted at multimedia applications showing pictures, sounds, and videos are beneficial to the learning styles of various learners.
  • 4. •Internet Content • • • All of the websites used throughout this project are reliable sources of information and are related to teaching and learning how to tell time. Clicking on the graphics found throughout the presentation will bring you to the original websites from which the materials were taken from.   • 7. •Podcast Learning With Little Hands: Telling Time Podcast • • • • Teachers can play this podcast for students to help introduce the analog clock to their students. While listening to this podcast, students can have a small Judy Clock in front of them. This will give them the opportunity to practice and explore the clock while they are listening to the podcast.   • 16. •Subject-Specific Internet-based Resource Interactive Mathematics Investigations (Illuminations) • • • • Illuminations is an online resource that provides standardsbased materials for teaching and learning math. “Grouchy Lessons of Time” This lesson provides an instructional plan along with materials, assessments, and extensions involving the concept of time. The activities provided help students at different levels to develop the skills in telling time.

  • 19. •Uses of the Internet Online Reference Materials • “Daylight Saving Time is a way of making better use of the daylight in the evenings by setting the clocks forward one hour during the longer days of summer, and back again in the fall.”
  • 20. •Telling Time Rubric Students could work in different activities that involve reading analog clocks such as: placing the numbers on the clock, positioning the hands of the clock, and telling time to the hour and to the half hour. • • • This rubric was created with iRubric. On the Quizinator website, teachers can easily create worksheets, study sheets, exams, and quizzes for their classroom. Also, teachers can give access to team members and students to download the documents they created.
  • 23. •Web 2.0 Twiducate What is it? •A free online resource developed by educators for educators. •Social networking for schools! •Their overall goal is to create a place for teachers and students to continue their learning outside of the classroom. How does it work? •Teachers can create their own online classroom. •Students can log in with a private code developed by the teacher. •Teachers and students can #TellingTime to share inspirations, ideas, thoughts, and reflections.

  5. These sites can be very useful in teaching a unit on time. -The blog “First Grade W.O.W” by Nancy VandenBerge, provided a mini unit to help introduce the concept of clocks and telling time. She provided various materials such as books, lessons, and games to help first grade students learn and practice telling. -The blog "What the Teacher Wants" by Rachelle and Natalie, provided a Telling Time Packet which included many engaging activities and games for first grade students who are learning how to tell time.   10. This graphic organizer was created on Kidspiration. A KWL chart is a great way to launch a lesson or unit. It gives the students and teacher an opportunity to see what they already know about reading an analog clock. This will help activate the students’ prior knowledge. The W column allows students to think critically and ask questions about parts of analog clocks that they might be confused or unsure about. The L column can be used at the end of the lesson or unit as a formative assessment.
