18. Putting on a show of Mueck’s work is an outsized challenge for a gallery,
as Richard Calvocoressi, the director of the Scottish National Gallery of
Modern Art, explains. “You need the space,” he says, simply.
“Each work is such a one-off, it’s quite difficult to include more than one or
two in each room. For other artists that make realist sculptures, the point
of their work is for them to be mistaken for real people; that’s not the case
with Mueck.” Each of the artist’s sculptures is smaller or larger than the
real thing.
