PCs to Windows 10.

New things in Windows 10
 The Start Menu has returned. It combines Apps
and Programs and it can be resized to meet your
needs
 A new browser – Edge. A work in progress
 Multiple Desktops to separate activities.
 Cortana – an improved search engine plus voice
 Notification Area. Can now include notifications
from other programs such as Facebook
 Improved Apps – Mail, Calendar, Photos and
Office Mobile

Getting Windows 10
 There are three ways to obtain Windows 10
– buy a new PC with Windows 10 preloaded,
– buy a license key to Windows 10 online,
– or upgrade an existing Windows 8.1 or Windows 7
PC.
 If you have a legitimate version of Windows 7 ,
Windows 8 or Windows 8.1, Microsoft is giving a
free upgrade if you upgrade before July 29 2016
 If you upgrade, your Windows 7 or 8 will
disappear.
 If you want to keep your old system and install
Windows 10, it will cost $119 for Windows 10
Home and $199 for Windows 10 Pro

Installing Windows 10
 Before you do anything, we’re going to give you
our standard advice: back up your data
 If you own a qualifying Windows PC, you had
the option of “reserving” a free copy of
Windows 10. At some point, Microsoft will
invite you to begin the upgrade process
 If you have not received the email from
Microsoft, there is an alternative – the Media
Creation Tool

 Using Windows Media Creation Tool
– Avoid waiting for Microsoft email
– Can upgrade existing system
– Can create a Windows 10 disk

 You need to select for 32 or 64 bit computer
– shown on Computer Properties

 Using Media
Creation Tool,
choices are:
– Upgrade this PC now
– Create Installation
Media for another PC

Doing a “clean install”
Microsoft has changed the “activation
process” for Windows with Windows 10.
After installation of Windows 10, Microsoft
will remember the details and no further
activation codes will be required.
 Upgrade your existing system and check it
is activated
 Create an Install disk using Media Creation
Tool and do a clean install

Change you mind! – Go back to
Windows 7 or Windows 8.1
 To make life easier on Windows 7 and 8.1 converts,
Microsoft will allow you to rollback your Windows
10 installation to the previous operating system for
30 days post-upgrade.
 Downgrading to your older OS requires that you
still have your Windows.old folder at
C:Windows.old.
 This will not work if you have done a “clean install”
of Windows 10
 You can still re-upgrade to Window 10 until July
29, 2016

Before you use the rollback option
 Back up your data
 Find product keys for your Windows 7 or 8 system.
You should not need them, but just in case.

For Rollback
 Open the Start menu, select the Settings app, and go
to Update & Security > Recovery.

After Rollback
 Older programs may need to be reinstalled
 Old Passwords may need to be used
After the 30 days,
 Do a clean install of your old system. You need
product keys
 Use a System Image that you saved previously

Comments about Windows 10
Windows 10 dispenses with most of the things
people hated about Windows 8/8.1. Even better,
Windows 10 runs faster than previous versions,
enough to make a five year-old PC perform better
than it did when new.

Problems with Toshiba Laptops
 Bruce Arnold, who runs the C Programmers SIG,
reported to the ACGNJ that a club member with a
Toshiba laptop could not install Windows10 and
"has left the laptop with the Bridgewater
Microsoft store to resolve the Windows 10 issue."
 He also has a Toshiba Laptop with Windows 7
and is holding off until this problem is resolved.

Forced Updates
 This is an old issue. Updates will be installed as
they become available. You cannot choose when
and if to install updates.
 This is Microsoft’s response to 60% of users never
install updates, creating a major security problem

Windows 10 Service Agreement
 The Windows 10’s services agreement: the
operating system has the right to scan all software
and hardware on your computer and disable
anything it believes is illegal.
 Also included in Windows Phone and X-Box Live
Service Agreements
 There’s a good chance any pirated software you
run on Windows 10 may not last much longer.

Windows Update Delivery Optimization(WUDO)
To disable WUDO, follow these steps:
• Open the Start Menu
• Click or tap “Settings”
• Select "Update & security"
• In the left-side pane, select “Windows Update”
• In the right-side pane, select “Advanced options”
• In the new right-side pane that opens, select “Choose how
updates are delivered”
• Move the slider control under “Updates from more than
one place” to “OFF”

Wi-Fi Sense
• Windows 10's Wi-Fi Sense feature that lets your friends
automatically connects to your wireless network without
providing the Wi-Fi password.
• To disable Wi-Fi Sense, go to Windows Settings, then Network &
Internet and then click "Change Wi-Fi settings," and then
"Manage Wi-Fi settings."
• From there, you can change a variety of settings. Turn
OFF everything under the Wi-Fi Sense heading; disable WI-Fi
password sharing with Facebook, Outlook, or Skype; and have
Wi-Fi Sense forget the list of known Wi-Fi networks.

Change the default web browser from Microsoft Edge
 Open the Start Menu.
 Choose “Settings”.
 In the left pane, select “Default apps”.
 Scroll down in the right pane until you see “Web
browser”
 A Microsoft Edge icon is probably shown under the
“Web browser” entry. Click or tap this and a list of
possible browser options will be displayed. Your
previous browser should be in the list. Click the entry
for your old browser to set the default browser back to

Cortana
 Cortana is a “personal assistant” that learns about you
from your email, web searches, calendar etc.
 If you find this creepy, you can turn it off.
– To end the collection of data through it, type “cortana” in the
search box and click on the first link in
the search results (system settings). Then slide the off/on
switch to “OFF".
