“Trying to determine the market size of the Internet
of Things is like trying to calculate the market for
plastics, circa 1940. At that time, it was difficult to
imagine that plastics could be in everything.”

Many of our projects are inspired by big shifts we see happening in the world, each within a technological, social and cultural context. Our current project focuses on informal and micro enterprise, from both a people and business perspective. We see that micro-businesses are expanding, in Nairobi, in Spain, in the U.S. and globally; yet despite being the backbone of most economic activity, microenterprises are misunderstood and their needs underserved. We want to better understand the contemporary lives of everyday entrepreneurs (in Nairobi and across the globe) and how they may impact business-as-usual. Here in Nairobi we are interested particularly in two types of entrepreneurs– tech entrepreneurs and parallel entrepreneurs. We want to understand better micro-enterprise here in your city. In the context of your experiences.
Mention the interviewees and some of the companies they represent:(ANIMATION)
Sounds simple? It is; it’s not a whole new “industry”, but rather is simply the internet expanding into the physical world. It will provide brand new capabilities to us – the user – but it will still be about services that are meaningful and bring value to people and companies. It’s not all that foreign a concept – in fact many IoT-enabled services are already here.
The question is often asked – what’s the market size of the IoT? Again, this is the wrong question – it’s not an industry itself, nor can its size be calculated… (see quote)
So, as I was saying: the trueIoT is more than connected devices – it provides services based on that new connectivity.…not just about closed systems - the intranet of things.Build: IoT blue banner. So, what might these services look like?... (PTO)

No one company is going to build and manage the IoT – it’s just so enormous, diverse, varied. It’s like saying one company would manage the internet – there are some important players but it’s enormous and each player has a role. The IoT will be the same (remember – it’s the internet moving into the real world)
We see the real value of the IoT not coming from connecting things to the internet in itself (“look, my cat is connected to the internet!”), but from the services you can build on top of that connection: “Look, I can find my cat’s location at any time and use those data points to make a 3D virtual map of my garden!”.So, much like the revolution we’ve seen around apps developed for smartphones and tablets, the IoT will open up new opportunities for us to develop services around the way we live.
Following on from the previous point, many of these players will be people like you, not established companies. With the revolution in making and hacking, and individuals being able to produce their own products and services – without having to use the traditional tools and channels, the evolution of the IoT will surely be largely in the hands of the people. Which leads us to… (NEXT)
Sounds obvious, but the interactions, design and delivery of an IoT-enabled product and service are multi-dimensionaleg. BERG Little Printer. When developing solutions in this space, you need to consider every aspect. Where developing software has its own challenges and product development likewise, these connected devices need an understanding and management of both those areas. We’ll see more of this later.
We’ll use some of the tools during this weekend
So, today we’ll:Think about the real human needs we’re fulfilling with the products/services we createWe’ve gathered together people with different backgroundsWe think you, and people like you will be really important in helping to build the IoT
