Evalution: Question 1
2. W H AT I S T H E G E N R E O F YO U R

The genre of our product is pop/rock.
Pop/rock is a music genre which mixes a catchy pop style and light lyrics
with guitar-based rock songs. Van Morrison’s “Brown eyed girl” is an example
of a song of this genre.
Conventions of a pop/rock music video usually include the artist miming
the lyrics along with sometimes a story featuring other actors on the side. As a
group, we made sure that our music video included the singer miming as well
as a boy and a girl actor to feature in a story.
3. CONVENTIONS USED
We used a range of different camera angles, we used a lot of close ups for the brown
eyes as the brown eyes are our motif and symbol for our products. The close up shot
enables the audience to realise the importance of the brown eyes, as they are used in the
digipak, magazine advertisement and numerous times in the music video.
Camera movement is used to follow or trace the artist/band/actor and follow their
movements. To do this, we used camera shots such as crane shots, pans, tilts and tracking.
We used different shades of lighting to emphasize the difference between the
storyline and the singer miming. We used a dream effect on the scenes with the female
actor when it was supposed to be the male actor’s thoughts about his past lover.
4. CONVENTIONS USED
CONTINUED…
To make sure that our media products used, developed and challenged forms and
conventions of real media products we did a lot of research on other music videos and
conventions they used. We researched music videos of our own genre as well as music videos of
other genres to compare them and decide which conventions we particularly wanted to use for
our own music video.
Our group decided to subvert a convention of our genre, we did this by using dancing from
the singer as well as the actors, this isn’t usually seen in a music video of a pop/rock genre. We
decided to use dancing as even though pop/rock songs don’t tend to be dancing songs, as a
group we decided the dancing element would be a good convention for our video as it fits well
with the chorus of the song itself.
5. MISE-EN-SCENE
In terms of mise-en-scene, the setting of the music video was in a park, house and by a
riverside. We researched settings before deciding the final settings to be used as a final group.
The costumes have also been researched, we brainstormed a range of different costume
ideas, the two males wore winter clothes including knitted jumpers whereas the girl had an outfit
of a typical pop/rock music genre, leather jacket and a dress, the dress for the pop side and the
leather for the rock side. Make up was naturalistic. Lighting is also natural, we didn’t use any
lights of our own. We used weather shots to also emphasize the weather while we filmed. The
weather when we filmed was quite dark and gloomy, as a group we found this perfect as it
reflected the male’s mood, he felt isolated and alone while being separated from his lover. When
they are reunited and dancing in the living room, the lighting is a lot brighter which also refletcts
the happiness and relief of the characters to be back together.
