IoT Affects BACnet How?

2. IoT Affects BACnet How?
• Make clear at the start where we're going.
I'll be bringing you through
BACnet's history of
outlasting all comers.
3. IoT Affects BACnet How?
• What's BACnet got going for it?
BACnet's plus-column:
• interoperability • open
• enduring • self-discoverable
• not central configured
4. IoT Affects BACnet How?
• What's IoT got going for it?
The Internet of Things, I have
to admit, is one of BACnet's
better comers.
5. IoT Affects BACnet How?
• What's IoT got going for it?
IoT is so trendy, one
definition is “everything that
is good.”
6. IoT Affects BACnet How?
• What's IoT got going against it?
• Another definition of IoT is:
“the world's most widely
deployed Distributed Denial
of Service bot-net.”
7. IoT Affects BACnet How?
• What's makes IoT and BACnet different?
IoT is almost exclusively
wedded to wireless. BACnet
is seeing almost no uptake
for wireless.
8. IoT Affects BACnet How?
• What's makes IoT and BACnet different?
It is almost as though: one of
them must not have gotten
the memo.
9. IoT Affects BACnet How?
• Where do IoT and BACnet overlap?
IoT is good as a network of
sensors. BACnet is good as
a network of sensors.
10. IoT Affects BACnet How?
Steam IQ (Peter Owens CEO) provides an IoT
based ultrasonic steam trap monitor that installs
easily. Steam is used to power cities (Paris and
New York), run refineries, brew beer, sterilize
instruments and heat colleges. Testing steam
traps that regulate the flow of steam is labor-
intensive, done manually once per year, and there
are millions of steam traps in the United States.
Very few are monitored due to cost.
11. IoT Affects BACnet How?
• Where do IoT and BACnet overlap?
IoT is good for collecting data
to trend. BACnet is good for
collecting data to trend.
12. IoT Affects BACnet How?
Vata Verks (Alex Cheimets CEO) has developed a
cheap and simple non-invasive water usage
sensor which leverages fluctuating magnetic fields
inside a building’s utility meters. The sensor
installs without cutting pipes or spilling a drop. The
sensor simply straps on, detects anomalies and
leaks, tracks usage and costs, and analyzes and
optimizes building performance.
13. IoT Affects BACnet How?
Vata Verks is targeting an aggregate North
American market valued at $2B and a distribution
channel made up of 3rd party building service
providers such as security, building automation,
building analytics & optimization all in support of
building owners, as well as other sectors.
BACnet folks, that sound like familiar territory?
14. IoT Affects BACnet How?
• Where do IoT and BACnet overlap?
IoT is good at scheduling
daily and weekly things.
BACnet is good at
scheduling daily and weekly
things.
15. IoT Affects BACnet How?
• Where do IoT and BACnet overlap?
IoT is good for remote
manual overrides. BACnet
is good for remote manual
overrides.
16. IoT Affects BACnet How?
• What has IoT got that BACnet doesn't?
• Onboarding a device at
deployment is a piece of
cake.
17. IoT Affects BACnet How?
• What has IoT got that BACnet doesn't?
• How come BACnet doesn't
have similarly simple
deployment?
18. IoT Affects BACnet How?
• Whatever makes IoT great, BACnet can also
have.
Yes!
19. IoT Affects BACnet How?
• What's makes IoT and BACnet different?
Battery means no need to run
service to that location.
(but you'll want to put a sensor on that, to
warn you when it needs maintenance.)
20. IoT Affects BACnet How?
• What's makes IoT and BACnet different?
Battery sensor – that's gonna
run on a battery.
(you'll want to put a sensor on that too, to
warn you when it needs maintenance.)
21. IoT Affects BACnet How?
• What's makes IoT and BACnet different?
• Battery sensor takes from
the energy budget; shortens
the advertised battery life.
• (everybody would rather hear you “say”
that the battery lasts forever.)
22. IoT Affects BACnet How?
• What's makes IoT and BACnet different?
Why not just use a battery
that lasts forever?
• At least “say” that the battery lasts forever.
What it's powering will become obsolete--
we live in a disposable economy.
23. IoT Affects BACnet How?
• Why not just capitulate to IoT instead of
competing?
If a Smart lamp has a 25 yr
LED bulb, but its crypto is
cracked in the first five
years, does the owner throw
it out?
24. IoT Affects BACnet How?
• Why not just capitulate to IoT instead of fighting
against it?
“Security is the new expiring
filament.” - Rodney Hess
25. IoT Affects BACnet How?
• Why not just capitulate to IoT instead of fighting
against it?
“If a device cannot be
upgraded, when it is five
years old, for the greater
good, it should self-
destruct.”
26. IoT Affects BACnet How?
• Why not just capitulate to IoT instead of fighting
against it?
“If a device can be upgraded,
then whoever has the crypto
key for upgrade, owns it.”
27. IoT Affects BACnet How?
• What makes IoT great, isn't anything that
BACnet can't also have.
If you pair winning
applications and logistics
with connectivity, you win.
28. IoT Affects BACnet How?
• What IoT has, that BACnet ain't got, it'll get.
“If we we had some ham, we
could have ham and eggs, if
we had some eggs."
paraphrasing Groucho
Marx.
