2. What we did we do this week? Went Farm Visiting! aka. Market Research
3. Farm Visiting KokFah Technology Farm P/L @ Kranji Countryside What’s so special? It has a “market” area where farmers congregate “Farm” area in the backyard
4. Farm Visiting Our original motive Seek out a farmer or a farm that grew potatoes Find out how to optimize growth and yield Compare planting strategies
5. Farm Visiting The Reality Our Subject Matter Expert, (a real life farmer!) said that the yields would be exceedingly low And there are much more issues to consider
6. Farm Visiting Advise from our SME Switch from potatoes to sweet potatoes Why? Sweet potatoes are more pest and disease resistant Require less “work” and “care” Harvest is faster, yield is higher in the tropics
8. Farm Visiting Is it better? YES!!! Better source of bio-energy Less fertilizer needed Less dependence on soil quality Unlike potatoes, sweet potatoes will not become toxic.
The past week we decided to do some market research and go farmer hunting.
So I and Yong Sheng decided to go check out the Lim Chu Kang area which was behind our house. After driving around for some time, we were attracted to a crowd at the KokFah Tech Farm.So we were thinking… if got crowd, must be interesting, right? When we go in, we realize it’s not just a farm but also a market area where other farmers can come to sell their goods. And we managed to talk to some farmers.
Important part is optimizing growth and yield.Don’t talk too long here.10s
The part here is to say that we found someone who has real life experience of what is going on.And then say that potatoes can grow, but take very long and the potato would be very small. So, it’s not productive because the output will be very small. Also, got other things to consider like how potatoes need pesticides and well-aerated soil. And… China and India is producing a lot of potatoes that are very cheap, might not be that profitable30s
During the farm visit, we were advised by the Subject-Matter Expert that we should consider switching from normal potatoes to sweet potatoes. Mainly because on theory, sweet potatoes do not attract pests and diseases as readily compared to potatoes. Sweet potatoes require lesser fertilizers and have a smaller dependency on aerated soil, so this means that poor villagers can plant a batch and wait until they’re ready for harvest with minimum effort spend Lastly, sweet potatoes favour the high temperature that is typical of the tropical region, hence growth would be faster and will lead to faster harvest and so a higher yield.
But the most important information we got was how to optimize the yield. Basically, we just needed a good drainage system. And this works well with our current method as excess water is able to drain out from gaps within the wood structure, or simple holes at the bottom of plastic containers.Lastly, and most importantly, something that we couldn’t get online. Phosphorus-based fertilizers. At most 20s
This part, just read through. No use explaining except for last point.Potatoes when they grow shoots become toxic. But sweet potatoes don’t. They maintain their amount of energy, but just become less sweet
So what else we learnt? It will benefit the villagers more if we spent some time planting the tubers beforehand and allowing them to grow to saplings. This way, the villagers would be able to get their first crop of sweet potatoes much sooner.
It was also suggested that sweet potatoes can be planted in-between trees or between their existing crops.By rotating the land use, we also help minimize the risk of crop diseases outbreaks, hence allowing villagers to spend less on pesticides and better utilize their land.
Discovering all the advantages of sweet potatoes , we decide to test on them at the same time. The planting methods for potatoes also apply for sweet potatoes. We have already planted some samples in a container with normal potting soil. Now we are observing and waiting for the bud to grow. Some adjustment will be made such the moisture and ph of soil. We believe this vertical farming concept can solve the villagers’ problem.
