TEXTUAL ANALYSIS OF
STUDENT WORK
Art of Artistry
SHOT 1
The first shot has a dark establishing shot
of a factory in the background, with a
oxford heritage dictionary definition of
creativity in the foreground. This is used to
re-introduce the definition of creativity to
the audience as well as expressing the main
idea of the video to the audiences. The use
of the dictionary definition is used to
connote that many people define and
understand the word creativity by the
definition from the dictionary, with the low
lighting of the factory background, this
connotes that the definition doesn’t show
what creativity really is.
SHOT 2
An establishing shot is used to introduce the
title of the documentary, along with a
rhythmic piece in the background. The
turning on of lights is used to tell the
audience and reveal what creativity actually is.
The slowly turning on of light is used to
connote that creativity is spreadable as one
starts to be creative, it will influence others
and leading to them being creative, this can
also be used to connote that everyone can be
creative, even though they do not notice that
they are creative. The wide establishing shot is
used to connote that there are many area,
space and there is not a limit in terms of
creative. The rhythmic piece in the
background is therefore used to connote that
being creative is very relaxing and there are
no stress, no right or wrong for being creative.
SHOT 3
Quick cuts of a variety of shots of
the same man working on one project
along with the rhythmic piece in the
background. The different shots of
the man working on his project
connotes that he is very focus in he
work, and with the different angle of
the shot, it connotes that creativity
can be understand in different angles,
as there are no restrains in creativity.
The background piece has further
connote that there are no constrains
in creativity as people can treat being
creative as a job, or only an interest.
SHOT 4
The close up shot of a artist doing a free
hand drawing with only ambient sound in the
background. The close up shot is used to
connote that the artist is very focus, it as also
highlighted the details of the drawing. The
fact that the artist is doing a free hand
drawing has also connote that there is no limit
in terms of being creative, for some people,
all you need to become creative is pen and
paper. The artist using a pen to sketch instead
of a pencil is also used to connote that there
are no right and wrong in creative as a mistake
can also be a part of the finishing piece. With
the ambient sound in the background, this
connotes that artists are normally very calm
and focused while they are working
SHOT 5
The medium close up shot of Jeff in
his studio explaining what has lead to
him being creative. The diegetic
dialogue of him talking about what
has influenced him to become
creative has further connote that the
act of being creative is spreadable.
The books in the back of Jeff has
connote that he requires a high
amount of knowledge and
understanding to allow him to be
what he now is.
SHOT 6
A medium shot of professor
Gauntlett with a bright lighting
explaining what he thinks about being
creative. The bright lighting and two
books on the table connotes that he is
very well known and is a public
speaker. The diegetic dialogue of him
saying “ I think everyone has the
potential to be creative” connotes
that there are no limit and no right or
wrong in being creative. With the
background of a classroom, it
connotes the high academic
achievements of him as a professor.
SHOT 7
A slow pace cuts of a variety of shots of the
artist Judith drawing and doing the interview
with the ambient sound of the streets in
London. The variety of shots is used to connote
that she is very focused on her piece, and do not
easily get disturbed by others. When she is doing
her interview, we can see that she is holding her
pens and sketch book tight while her bags are
only left beside her, this has connote the
importance of pen and paper to her. The
location chosen was in a public area in London,
this shows and connote that there is not a
specific location needed for being creative, it can
be anywhere. The ambient sound in the shots is
used too connote that the artist is very focused
oh her work, and will not be distracted easily by
others.
SHOT 8
A medium close up shot was used while
the CEO of sleepydog, Toby Moores, is
explaining about his experience. The
plain white background chosen for the
interview connotes that there is no limit
for being creative, and it all begins with
nothing until you stepped in to the world
of creative. The diegetic dialogue of
Toby explaining his experience connotes
that creative does not have a specific end
to it, and you will not know what
creative will lead you to as there is no
limit to be creative.
SHOT 9
Medium close up shot of Paul Bennett
in a low lighting studio drawing. The low
key lighting connote that we have a lack
of understanding about creativity and
about art. The medium close up shot is
used to connote that the artist is very
focus on his work. The close up shot of
Paul’s work connotes that being creative
does not mean that your work needs to
be original, it can also be a recreation of
a piece. The background piece has
further connote that there are no
constrains in creativity as people can
treat being creative as a job, or only an
interest.
SHOT 10
Two consecutive medium close up shot
of David and Toby explaining what they
think the definition to creative be. This
connotes that there is not a specific
definition like the dictionary to define
creativity, as everyone sees it differently,
and understand it differently. By having
David and Toby explaining what they
think about creativity, this has created a
corresponding with the very beginning
of the documentary. At the start and the
end of these two shots there is a shot
fade in black which can be used to
represent a blink, connoting being
creative is very easy, just like blinking.
