2. Introduction
 An alumni of Syracuse University School of Law,
Christopher Stender is an immigration attorney and
partner at Federal Immigration Counselors AZ. In addition
to work, Christopher Stender uses his knowledge of
immigration issues to support related organizations, such
as the Florence Immigrant Refugee Rights Project
(FIRRP).
Established in 1989 by attorney Chris Brelje, FIRRP
formed after a public plea by immigration judge John J.
McCarrick that asked Arizona-based attorneys to
compensate for the lack of a public defender system in
immigration removal proceedings. Today, the project
provides free legal services to more than 3,000 people
and advocates for the humane treatment of immigrant
detainees.

3. Florence Project
 Fees for legal representation multiply quickly, and
immigrant detainees may not have the financial
resources to pay for services. To ensure there are
enough lawyers willing to take on cases without
payment, FIRRP instituted the Florence Project Pro
Bono Program. The program is responsible for
recruiting, training, and mentoring attorneys who
accept immigration cases on a pro bono basis. Apart
from helping with representation of individuals in
deportation proceedings, pro bono attorneys also
gain invaluable experience they continue to use
throughout their careers.
