Too much of me talking and without people taking the mic there's a limit to the value of it being mainly messaging.” “ It was a pleasure, and I enjoyed it. ”  “ I found delivering the TLC webinar very useful to get views from many people and to be able to record them to listen and read later.”

  1. In the Academic Dev Unit we deliver and support both accredited and non acredited courses, for example post grad cert in learning and teaching, and also a open workshop prog where we have a series of f2f workshops scheduled that open and attended by everyone at the uni . In brief, we recognise through the work we do that staff value and appreciate the opportinuies to discuss and communicate with each other about various aspects of learning and teaching, share ideas and talk through problems etc and our role was to support and facilitate these. Our pgcap is acredited by the HEA, and is a probationary requirement for new staff – not always avaialble for everyone when they want it One of the things we identifed with the open prog workshop these, are usually 3 hrs f2f, and some staff find it difficult to block out this dedicated ampunt of time, what we have also found is that theses workshops, although feedback from participants have found it valuable these oftne to deliver to low numbers and uusally to the same faces We decided to review these based on some of the activities we were already implementng in our pg cert programme We dedcied to look at the possibility of having a blended learning apporach to our staff development opportunity to give more flexibility and to exploit the technology where possible Before I go to describe the TLC series – take a few minutes to discuss any blended learning staff development opportunites….

  3. Hold onto some of the things you discussed in your group and during the course of my talk, see if you can identify with any of these I describe the TLC series here at Salford. How the TLC developed Our PGCAP course makes use of technology enhanced learning, and it is designed so we embed its use within the programme and assessment, and also to ensure we model good practice in learning and teaching. We have already started to use sychrous technology to deliver our programme using Elluminate Invited our PVC(A) to give a talk about learning and teaching at the university. This gave partciapnts an opportunity to engage with a senior member of staff about a subject which was pertinent to the programme. it gave participants an opportunity to engage with the technology which was being used within the programme. The TLC idea was given more momentum when our PVC(A) decieded tp engage with and work with a wider group of staff across the university to help him develop our revised learning and teaching strategy. These sessions were well attended and generated more interest in this type of approach as well as the technology itself

Elluminate used for media-synchronicity Mix of face to face and evening webinars TLCs are a series of f2f and blended staff development opportunities, with an underlining ethos that it was lead by acdemic staff from acorss the uni, and not just staff from ADU. And that it was an opporutnity for staff together and talk and share ideas 1hr – we felt this was the right amount of time to focus on a topic and to still enable the necessary conversation and interaction. We also scheduled in lunchtime and evening sessions to give added flexibility

An example of one of these TLCs – this one lead by our VC Scheduled for the evening Initial time to help people log in, set up, check technical set up Chrissi briefed the VC on the technology and also the approach to conduct his talk within the online environment, eg. Use of polling, raising your hands to ask questions and enourage interaction
  6. This is the first series of TLC we facilitated this year. There are 3 f2f and 3 webinar sessions – The themes are based on the staff expertise
  7. Demonstrated to the university another apporach to staff development which staff activity engaged in Staff coming together from across disciplines Staff are willing to engage with this approach, share their experience and also want an opportunity to experiecne the technology
  8. In total, 72 staff participated in all events (face-to-face sessions: 24/per session: 8; webinars: 48/per session: 16).

  10. Building on its success, we have the following ideas – but the cavent to this is that the unit is currently going through a restructure and so some of these things may not be achievable
