2. HISTORY
Alcohol has been in use since ancient time in all
communities, civilisations and religions of all countries of
the world. But the record of actual fermenting and
brewing goes back to 10,000 BC in the Persian,
Babylonian, Egyptian, Greek and Roman civilisations and
others.
Some countries have used alcohol variously including for
worshiping and on social functions and celebrations in the
past. Such practices were prevalent even in Roman,
Egyptian and Chinese civilisations

3. The tribal people of modern day India and in particular
Santal tribe claims that Alcohol and it’s usage is part of
their culture and is used for worshiping, wedding and on
any social occasions including festivals, births and deaths.
Nothing takes place without alcohol.
There is no harm if it is used for cultural reason in
moderation and many people in the world are using it.

4. SOME BENEFICIAL EFFECT OF MODERATE USE OF
ALCOHOL

2. Enhances Enjoyment, Pleasure and quality of life.
3. Social lubricant and relaxant when used in moderation
and most people do this

5. THE REAL PROBLEM LIES WITH THE MINORITY OF
DRINKERS IN ANY COMMUNITY DUE TO MISUSE
OF ALCOHOL

6. THERE ARE THREE TYPES OF ALCOHOL MISUSE
1.Hazardous Drinking-Drinking over recommended
limit(no more than 3-4 units a day for men and no more
than 2-3 units a day for women. One unit=10ml of pure
alcohol which is roughly half a pint)
2. Harmful Drinking-Drinking over the recommended
limits and experiencing alcohol-related health problems
3. Dependant drinking-Feeling unable to function without
alcohol

7. RISKS OF ALCOHOL MISUSE

8. WARNING SIGNS OF ALCOHOL MISUSE/ABUSE
1. Feeling that you should cut down your drinking
2. Other people have been criticising your drinking habit
3. Feeling guilty or bad about your drinking
4. Needed a drink first thing in the morning to steady your
nerves

and treatment can be offered.
2. Acceptance of the problem and motivation to get better
by sufferers

The better understanding and support of the family is
crucial to achieve success.
Support groups such as Alcohol Anonymous and Age
concern with easy access to sufferers.

11. The state or central government need to take this problem
seriously specially in tribal areas where this is a major
health and economical problem hampering their progress
and prosperity.
