Assignment title                        IG4 – Film Title Sequence

The purpose of this assignment is to:
Develop your understanding, research and analysis of the use of motion graphics within the media
industries.
Develop your skills in ideas generation and pre-production planning in relation to a motion graphics
sequence.
Develop your production and post-production skills by producing a motion graphics sequence.


 Scenario
 Moving image productions frequently feature elements of graphic design for the screen. Television
 stations are frequently branded with an animated logo between shows, caption bars
 ondocumentaries and news features can animate on and off the screen, title sequences often mix
 still with animated and moving images, and DVD/Blu Ray interfaces use combinations of animated
 graphics and typography with digital video sequences. It is also common to see visual effects applied
 to moving image sequences in a wide range of productions.

 Motion graphics techniques are used to create these sequences. This assignment will give you the
 opportunity to develop skills in motion graphics by planning and producing a feature film opening
 title sequence. These techniques take learners beyond shooting and editing video into more
 complex and sophisticated post-production techniques.

 Project planning is important and in motion graphics this covers generating ideas, making decisions
 about graphical content, and storyboarding the way this integrates with moving image. Work needs
 to be reviewed for quality throughout, so you will need to be able to assess the appropriateness of
 what they are producing against the given brief and examine its technical and aesthetic standards.

 For this assignment you will need to show evidence of how you have managed your project from the
 generation of ideas through to finished film title sequence.

 This assignment begins with investigations into motion graphics, which will enable you to understand
 the uses of graphics in moving image production. These investigations will cover both visual and
 technical research. You will look closely at existing motion graphics sequences to analyse their
 design and effects.

 You will apply motion graphics software techniques to create your visual material, which will be
 assessed for both its technical and aesthetic qualities.

Task 1
Produce a word-processed analysis of the use of motion graphics in opening        Unit 64: P1/M1/D1
title sequences.
Using industry terminology, comment on how motion graphics and compositing
video are used across the medium of both TV and film. Analyse examples from
a range of sources such as; TV idents, Sports programmes, News/Weather
reports and feature film opening title sequences.

Your analysis of motion graphics in film should be used as inspiration for your
own opening title sequence and it should be clear in your analysis which
examples will influence the development of your own title sequence.

*Your word-processed analysis must be uploaded to your IG4 assignment
blog along with embedded video examples of your analysed
footage/sequences.

Task 2
Using creativity and flair originate and plan your own opening title sequence Unit 64: P2/M2/D2
for a feature-length film.

Your ideas generation and sequence planning can be presented in the form of:
       Sketches
       Mind maps/mood boards
       Images you have gathered / found
       Photographs you have taken
       Digitally-produced assets/elements

Your planning must include a final draft storyboard (hand-drawn or digital) to
explain how you intend your opening title sequence to play on screen. This must
give clear information about how elements or assets will animate on screen.

*All ideas generation must be uploaded to your IG4 assignment blog.

Task 3
Produce an opening title sequence for a feature-length film using motion          Unit 64: P3/M3/D3
graphics to professional expectations.

Using a range of visual effects and motion graphics techniques, create a
sequence that imitates the codes and conventions for a feature-length film
sequence you have researched and analysed. You may incorporate some original
video footage, original photographic imagery and digitally-produced graphics.

You must clearly document through a combination of print screens and
embedded videos the production process of your title sequence. This should
include explanations of techniques and production practices you have used.

*You must also create an audio commentary to evaluate your work and
embed this onto your blog along with the final edit of your title sequence.

Develop your skills in ideas generation and pre-production planning in relation to a motion graphics sequence. Develop your production and post-production skills by producing a motion graphics sequence. Scenario Moving image productions frequently feature elements of graphic design for the screen. Television stations are frequently branded with an animated logo between shows, caption bars ondocumentaries and news features can animate on and off the screen, title sequences often mix still with animated and moving images, and DVD/Blu Ray interfaces use combinations of animated graphics and typography with digital video sequences. It is also common to see visual effects applied to moving image sequences in a wide range of productions. Motion graphics techniques are used to create these sequences. This assignment will give you the opportunity to develop skills in motion graphics by planning and producing a feature film opening title sequence. These techniques take learners beyond shooting and editing video into more complex and sophisticated post-production techniques. Project planning is important and in motion graphics this covers generating ideas, making decisions about graphical content, and storyboarding the way this integrates with moving image. Work needs to be reviewed for quality throughout, so you will need to be able to assess the appropriateness of what they are producing against the given brief and examine its technical and aesthetic standards. For this assignment you will need to show evidence of how you have managed your project from the generation of ideas through to finished film title sequence. This assignment begins with investigations into motion graphics, which will enable you to understand the uses of graphics in moving image production. These investigations will cover both visual and technical research. You will look closely at existing motion graphics sequences to analyse their design and effects. You will apply motion graphics software techniques to create your visual material, which will be assessed for both its technical and aesthetic qualities. 1
  • 2. Tasks Grading Criteria Mapping Task 1 Produce a word-processed analysis of the use of motion graphics in opening Unit 64: P1/M1/D1 title sequences. Using industry terminology, comment on how motion graphics and compositing video are used across the medium of both TV and film. Analyse examples from a range of sources such as; TV idents, Sports programmes, News/Weather reports and feature film opening title sequences. Your analysis of motion graphics in film should be used as inspiration for your own opening title sequence and it should be clear in your analysis which examples will influence the development of your own title sequence. *Your word-processed analysis must be uploaded to your IG4 assignment blog along with embedded video examples of your analysed footage/sequences. Task 2 Using creativity and flair originate and plan your own opening title sequence Unit 64: P2/M2/D2 for a feature-length film. Your ideas generation and sequence planning can be presented in the form of: Sketches Mind maps/mood boards Images you have gathered / found Photographs you have taken Digitally-produced assets/elements Your planning must include a final draft storyboard (hand-drawn or digital) to explain how you intend your opening title sequence to play on screen. This must give clear information about how elements or assets will animate on screen. *All ideas generation must be uploaded to your IG4 assignment blog. Task 3 Produce an opening title sequence for a feature-length film using motion Unit 64: P3/M3/D3 graphics to professional expectations. Using a range of visual effects and motion graphics techniques, create a sequence that imitates the codes and conventions for a feature-length film sequence you have researched and analysed. You may incorporate some original video footage, original photographic imagery and digitally-produced graphics. You must clearly document through a combination of print screens and embedded videos the production process of your title sequence. This should include explanations of techniques and production practices you have used. *You must also create an audio commentary to evaluate your work and embed this onto your blog along with the final edit of your title sequence. 2
