One main characteristic that gangs will often look for in a potential member is anti-social behavior and or isolation. A majority of the time, individuals may turn to gangs for the simple need to fill a void in their lives. This void may be a lack or rejection of support from family. Due to this void, individuals may seek a peer group in order to belong to something that will support their anti-social behavior. In other cases it can be a lack of a father figure
Once the child becomes isolated with no direction, the child becomes desperate for survival. As the child ages to early teens, the child may develop aggressive behavior and become involved in youth violence such as gangs and drug use before the age of 16.
