Preventing Cancer
Chelsea Larsen 2/22/13
Skin Cancer
 The most common form of cancer in US

 More than 3.5 million skin cancers per year…
 The Center for Disease Control and Prevention
states “Adults under 30 say they have had a
sunburn at least once in the past year..”
  (cbsnews.com)
What you may not know…
 Every sun burn you get
  will lead you closer to
  skin cancer

 This could come back to
  haunt you when you’re
  40
This is a BIG deal.
You MUST prevent
 skin cancer starting
        TODAY.
Or else…
You don’t want to be this girl….
Think your immune? Think again….

 Steve jobs died of cancer
and he has all the money
           in the world!
 Bob Marley did not die
  from playing soccer or
getting stung by a jelly fish
   but from skin cancer!
Even political leaders fight cancer…

            John McCain
             Bill Clinton
          George W Bush
So LISTEN up!
What is Cancer?
 “Group of diseases
  characterized by
  uncontrolled growth
  and spread of abnormal
  cells” (Hoeger 530).
How does this happen?

   Cancer starts with an
 abnormal growth of just one
            cell
 This one cell
  multiplies to make
  billions of
  cancerous cells!

 Once a tumor
  reaches a million
  cells it is considered
  an early form of
  cancer (Hoeger
  366)
 Eventually the cells will break
  off and travel throughout the
  body causing many different
  kinds of cancer
 Although this isn’t a
  big deal to you right
   now, by middle age
   you’ll have millions
 of precancerous cells
  floating in your body
 Not to worry though, your
  immune system and blood
   turbulence destroy most
       cancerous cells
 But if it misses one…
 That one cancer cell can
 multiply causing cancer in
         that area

                      (Hoeger 366)
For Example…
Risk Factors

 UV light exposure
 Complexion
 Personal and
  family history
 Work environment
 Radiation (Hoeger 377)
Warning signs
 Changes in
moles, warts,
 or skin sores
Warning Signs
 Dark lesions on palms, soles,
fingertips or toes, or on mucous
 membranes lining your mouth,
      nose, vagina, or anus
Warning Signs
 Small lesion with
  irregular border and
  portions that appear
  red, white, blue or
  blue-black

 As if acne wasn’t
  enough!
Prevention
 Seek the shade
 Sun rays are the worst
  between 10AM-4PM
 Think twice about
  tubing down the salt
  river in the afternoon.
Prevention
      Wear clothing! Yes
       bikinis are cute
       however super
       dangerous for your
       skin!
      Clothing is considered
       to be your most
       effective form of sun
       protection.
Prevention
 Some smart choice clothing
 includes: jeans, sunglasses, a
    hat, UPF label approved
   clothing (check the tags!)
Prevention
 DO NOT BURN
 “Suffering five or more sunburns doubles your
  lifetime risk” (Skincancer.org)
 Avoiding spending long periods of time in the
  sun
 Take cover when your skin appears pink or red
Avoid Tanning and UV Tanning Booths

 Yes, I know looking
  tan is “in” however a
  tan is never safe
 Obtaining Vitamin D
  should be through
  foods or dietary
  supplements
Avoid Tanning and UV Tanning Booths

 “New high-pressure sunlamps used in
tanning salons actually emit UVR doses
as much as 12 times that of the sun”
            (Skin Cancer Foundation).
           This causes DNA damage!
Challenge
 Wear PROTECTIVE UV
  APPROVED clothing when in
  the sun for extended
  periods of time
 Don’t forget to use your
  sunblock (30SPF can never
  go wrong!)
 Find fun activities in the
  SHADE
 NEVER use tanning booths
