Analysis of Horror Film Trailers
1.
2.
3. The trailer uses a wide shot, this camera shot emphasises the fact that the
location is isolated and in the middle of nowhere. Also the lighting is very
dark and dull, this mise-en-scene shows that the atmosphere is quite dark
and scary.
4. The symbolism of the cross signifies death and adds an enigma to the
trailer with the audience asking themselves who died? And why did they
die? Which fits into Freytag’s pyramid and the narrative structure of
rising action.
5. The trailer also uses an establishing shot, this camera angle shows the
audience where the drama is about to take place, from the mise-en-scene
the audience can also very clearly see that the house is run down and
abandoned.
6. This is the exposition part (Freytag’s pyramid) of the trailer. It is calm
and represents the normality of a fairly high-class nuclear family. The
child also represents innocence.
7. This is a close up of the family the audience has previously seen before in
the trailer, however this time it has been tampered with, as the eyes have
been cut out. This adds a sense of mystery to the audience and relates to
Freytag’s pyramid of Rising drama and the audience begin to question
who is this family? And what has happened to the picture?
8. The trailer uses creepy children in this scene we can see one of the
children stepping on her doll, this represents the loss of innocence and
makes the trailer even more emotional and relates to Freytag’s pyramid
of the climax.

frenetic, synchronised with pulsing, hard-beating music. This is falling
action, showing multiple, rapidly edited images of horror.
10. This two-shot shows the main protagonist looking out of the window
appearing that everything is normal, however if you look closely you see a
ghostly figure appear next to him showing that everything is not as it
seems.
11. The ending reinforces the product name, seen in this shot is written in the
logo typography on a window. The name written like this is a trade mark,
reminding the audience of the film and its links with any other publicity
material, such as the poster. The ending is quiet after the louder action
sequence seen before.
12.
13. Like the Woman in Black trailer. This trailer uses a wide shot, this camera
shot emphasises the fact that the location is isolated and in the middle of
nowhere. Also the lighting is very dark and dull, this mise-en-scene shows
that the atmosphere is quite dark and scary.
14. A wide-shot is used, this camera angle marks the beginning of the rising
action in Freytag’s pyramid, the first mystery, for example the audience
start to ask questions like who is this man? Why is he running away?
15. The rising action in Freytag’s pyramid continues, in this scene we see the main
antagonist surrounded by flames, this mise-en-scene could be seen as a symbolism
for hell. Also a mid-shot is used, this camera shot is used to show the antagonist
pulling a weird pose which almost looks as if his body is distorted and he is also
almost pulling a demonic pose which could represent he is turning into a monster
and this makes the audience uncomfortable and scared.
16. This shot reinforces the name of the film in the audience’s mind. This
links to the studio’s brand image - an important commercial element of
the trailer which is that the audience remembers the name of the product.
This reinforces that the studio is the brand and the film is the product.
17. A close is used, this camera angle continues the rising action in Freytag’s
pyramid, another mystery, for example the audience start to ask questions
who’s hand is that's? Why is it so weird?
18. Like The Woman in Black trailer The Nightmare on Elm Street trailer uses
creepy children in this scene we see a close up of a girl with her chest
completely ripped and torn, this shot is highly disturbing and also
represents the loss of innocence and makes the trailer even more
emotional and relates to Freytag’s pyramid of the climax.
19. Like The Woman in Black trailer. This trailer fits in just past Freytag’s
turning point: the action becomes frenetic, synchronised with pulsing,
hard-beating music. This is falling action, showing multiple, rapidly edited
images of horror.
20. Like The Woman in Black trailer. This trailer’s ending reinforces the product
name, seen in this shot is written in the logo typography like blood. The
name written like this is a trade mark, reminding the audience of the film
and its links with any other publicity material, such as the poster. The
ending is quiet after the louder action sequence seen before.
21. This use of a caption is a clear example of the climax as it says ‘don’t fall
asleep’ this caption establishes that the action is unresolved and
emphasises to the audience the fact that the film is a horror and will scare
them so much that they will be unable to sleep, which offers an incentive
for the audience to watch the film.
22.
23. The trailer opens with a montage, this editing technique shows a woman
getting reading, because she is the first person to be shown the audience
can assume that she is the main protagonist, this and the fact that girly,
up-beat music clearly indicates the genre of the film as a rom-com.
24. The trailer then cuts to a shot of the production company logo, it is a very well
known company, so it connotes to people that know the company that the film will
be very good.
25. We then see a medium close-up of a man and a woman, this cinematography
connotes that they are the main protagonists. Also the way they are dressed
connotes they are going on a date. The man is wearing quite scruffy clothes,
whereas the woman is dressed smartly, this mise-en-scene shows a contrast and
suggests the two people are from very different backgrounds.
26. We then see another montage, the trailer uses captions showing the audience that
the main protagonists are going on a date, captions are a technique commonly used
in romantic comedies, the audience then see the date go horribly, this is very funny
for the audience. Another caption then says ‘should have been the last’ like the
horror trailers this fits into Freytag's Pyramid as the audience start to ask
themselves why isn’t it their last?
27. We then see another montage, we see fade-away shots of the two main protagonists
with a baby and the parents of the baby showing everything is normal, then the
caption appears ‘fate has other plans’ and the non-diegetic music that has been
playing is suddenly stops and we hear the diegetic sound of a phone ringing and the
two protagonists rush to a hospital followed by a funeral scene, this relates to
Todorov’s theory as there is a disruption in equilibrium.
28. We then see a two shot of the two protagonists in a formal office being told that
they are the parental guardians of the baby, we see the protagonists shocked and
put in a position that they don’t want to be in, this is the basis of romantic
comedies.
29. Another montage is then used to show the protagonists failing to cope with
parenthood however in a comedic way this shows the genre again as a romantic
comedy.
30. We then see another montage of the protagonists starting to cope with parenthood
and fall in love with each other, this represents the restoration in equilibrium and
shows the audience the romance with in the film.
31. In the final sequence of the trailer we see the actors who play the main protagonists names,
for anyone who knows these actors they are well known, so it connotes to people that know
them that the film will be very good. Also we finally see the name of the film because the
audience will watch the trailer and be drawn in and then by showing the name of the film at
the end it will be more memorable as it is one of the last things you see, if it was at the
beginning by the end of the trailer the name will have been forgotten by most people.
