Summary from the third Capital C event held at Seven Dials Centre, Covent Garden on Tuesday March 10th 2015.
Capital C is a collaboration to improve cancer care for the people of London hosted by Macmillan Cancer Support and Swarm. The goal for the group is to put patient's voice at the heart of a long-term strategy to improve patient experience in London.
3. Overall project objectives
• Provide people affected by cancer with a new
model for participating in leading and driving
change within the framework of the London
Strategy.
• Put people affected by cancer at the centre of
decision-making about the future shape of holistic
cancer care in London by providing funding,
learning, development and access to decision-
makers/experts
4. March event objectives
• To bring (back) together a diverse group of
people people affected by cancer and
organisations
• To begin to prototype the early solutions
developed by the group through events 1 and 2
• To draw out further possible connections to
relevant partners (corporate, charity, non-profit)
4
6. Feedback from event
• 38 people attended (10 also attended pilot)
• 8 attendees were London-based service designers/innovators
• 2 attendees worked with cancer patients (London Cancer/
NHS England)
• 20 have answered the evaluation form (so far)
• 2 sent unprompted follow emails with thanks/positive
comments (including one poem again!)
7. Positive feedback…
• Overall score 4.2 out of 5
• 100% thought the organisation was Fabulous or
Good
• 87% thought the food was Fabulous or Good
• 82% thought the venue was Fabulous or Good
8. Positive feedback
“Really well organised and run. I thought the fact that we were asked to
come up with a 'prototype' idea meant that the discussions were far more
focused than they otherwise might have been, and in turn the ideas that
resulted felt more substantial. ….Enjoyed it very much!
“Innovative with lots of energy”
“Brilliant, very informative and it was a great place to network. It was
amazing finding out that others shared the same platform and thinking about
cancer.”
“The progression to formulate concrete ideas over three sessions was
excellent. ”
9. What makes Capital C work?
I really feel that our contributions are valued at these events, rather than just paying lip
service to canvassing patients experiences. I also like that there is a fun atmosphere
around what could be handled as a serious subject...because of this people relax more
and it's generally more productive.
Communications easy friendly and well timed….always actively welcoming, and it feels like
something tangible and worthwhile comes out of the sessions
Good to see the diversity and variety of those involved. Quite dynamic groups and
involvement.
Hearing views on all aspects of cancer experience and a surprise that technology seemed
to be part of the solutions that came up in the presentations
Lovely event I always enjoy and feedback to my groups at local level.
Everything is very friendly, yet efficient and well organised.
10. Continuing potential to develop
• 100% happy to involved in the next event
• 6 (of 16 respondents) had not attended before;
• 10 had attended at least one of our other events.
11. What could we do better?
50% said “Nothing”.
• Space/room made it difficult to see some presentations
• Clarity over whether the groups needed a facilitator
• Late comers were disruptive
• Clarify what is possible and what is not
• Evening felt too long for some
• Evaluation form (?)
14. Six Themes
1. Relationships
2. Mental wellbeing/coping with uncertainty & isolation
3. Physical well-being and health
4. Employment
5. Finances
6. Sense of identity
7 Challenges
15. • Solution focused on development of a discount
card (a ‘key’ that would open doors in London)
• Link to transport, need to improve relationships
CHALLENGE 1
How might we help ease relationships with friends and family by providing access to London’s
transport and unique arts/cultural activities for days out?
16. CHALLENGE 2
How could we tap into the vast population in the city to find a personalised buddy or doula-type mentor for
everyone directly affected by cancer in London?
• Took idea of match.com - applied to cancer
patients
• Individuals would create a profile that could be
matched based on common interests & problems
• Would enable searches based around needs/
specific criteria
• Other areas of interest could include wills, power
of attorney or issues related to life stage
• Need for safeguarding
17. CHALLENGE 3
How could we make the information/services/groups in London available and accessible to everyone in a single, online
place?
• Based on idea that people often don’t
know where to look or what to trust online
• A full information resource, linked to
information in charities and the NHS
• Also linked to online places/spaces and
would be searchable based on postcode/
type of cancer etc.
• Offline ‘yellow pages’ or support to get
people set up and using the platform
18. CHALLENGE 4
How might we help people who have had cancer in London re-train, building their skills and confidence to get back to work
with the support of larger, London-based organisations?
• Link to employers and create a ‘job tasters’
programme (fully paid?)
• Cancer champions could represent their
organisations/companies and talk about their own
experiences as well as opportunities
• Assistance to build your CV and focus on
capabilities not just qualifications
• Support with retraining or returning to work
• Need to rebuild confidence as well as career
19. CHALLENGE 5
How could we best provide improved information for employers/employees so that they better understand the needs and the
rights of people living with cancer in the workplace?
• ‘Advocates’ who could be trained online, focused
on Equalities Act
• Online toolkit for employers & employees
• Recognition of the need to have employees,
employers & advocates on the same side by
focusing on getting people back to work
20. CHALLENGE 6
How could we be better able to use London’s parks and green spaces to provide positive health and wellbeing benefits to
people affected by cancer?
• No one chose this challenge
• BUT green spaces & parks were mentioned
repeatedly in previous sessions
• Worth keeping in mind…..
21. CHALLENGE 7
How can we collaborate across cancer, health, social care, corporate & non-profit sectors to provide ways to tackle key issues
affecting people like sleep and depression?
• ‘Same place, same problem’ - interactive map
• Would allow for searches based on the side effect/
problem, rather than the cancer type
• Services would be shown on a map & rated by users
23. Fourth Event Planning
Feedback from Capital C participants
• 50% of respondents would like to
focus on what Capital C could look
like in the future
• 30% would like to explore
prototype solutions in further depth
• 15% would like to consider in more
depth the London Strategy and
what could be included in it.
Outline agenda
• Evolution & future of Capital C
• ‘Close the loop’ on ideas so far & get
more input on opportunities and
challenges to make them happen
• Develop a narrative that shapes the
strategy
