2. SEGOVIA, WORLD HERITAGE SITE
Segovia, declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985, is a city over two thousand years old
located only 87 kilometres (54.06 miles) from Madrid. Considered one of the most beautiful cities in
the world due to its extraordinary architectonic configuration, it has played a leading role throughout
the history of Spain and it is nowadays distinguished among other cities because of its cultural
dynamism, gastronomy, traditions, popular festivals and, above all, for its impressive Roman
Aqueduct.
Segovia is surrounded by a green belt formed by the Eresma and Clamores rivers. The city, 1,005
metres above sea level, enjoys a crystalline atmosphere that makes its light one of its most precious
treasures.
Recommended Routes:
Discover the historical centre in the old quarter of Segovia, the Aqueduct, the Casa de los Picos
(Diamond Tip House), San Martin’s Church, the Cathedral and the Alcazar.
What Not to Miss
1. Roman Aqueduct : With 800 metres in length and 28.10 metres in height, the more than 2,000
year-old Aqueduct is probably the most spectacular and best preserved aqueduct of any erected by
the Roman Empire, although, interestingly enough, the Segovian legend dictates that the devil was
the real architect.
2. The Alcazar : Built during the 11th century over the remain of a Roman fortress, the Alcazar stands
like an imaginary ship sailing between the valleys formed by the Clamores and Eresma rivers. With a
clear resemblance to a fairy tale castle, it has become one of the most visited monuments in Spain.
3. The Cathedral : It is one of the most beautiful examples of late Gothic architecture, which has led
it to be known as “Dame of the Cathedrals”. Its construction began in 1525 and it is a favoured
meeting point for storks, which usually rest on its pinnacles.
7. Sculpture of the Loba Capitolina

Suckling Pig (Cochinillo Asado) in Segovia,
Spain. It cooked in a special oven. The
criteria for both pigs and restaurants are very
strict. For the pigs: not heavier than 4-5
kilograms, milk-fed only, not older than three
weeks, a special breed and a special menu
for the feeding mother. Then it’s time for the
chef’s talent and the special oven.

Gothic and Mudéjar. Devastated by a fire in 1862, it was later rebuilt. It now houses the General
Militar de Segovia archive and museum of the Royal School of Artillery.

102. The Aqueduct located in Plaza del Azoguejo, is the defining
historical feature of the city. Like a number of other
aqueducts in Spain, Segovia’s Roman-built aqueduct
receives attention for being one of the “extraordinary
engineering accomplishments” existing in the country. It is
still used to deliver drinking water.

The aqueduct of Segovia is – because of its long span,
architectural beauty, uncharacteristic slenderness, and
dramatic presence in the center of a dense urban fabric –
the most impressive Roman structure in Spain, and one of
the most famous among the numerous aqueducts built by
the Romans throughout their vast Empire.

It consists of about 25,000 granite blocks held together
