Objectives Describe the properties shared by particles of matter Describe three states of matter Explain the difference between states of matter Bellringer In the kitchen, you might find three different forms of water. What are these three forms of water, and where exactly in the kitchen would you find them?
Particles of matter States of matter  Physical forms in which substances can exist 3 most familiar states Solid Liquid Gas Matter is made up of tiny particles called atoms and molecules. always in motion and are always bumping into one another
Solids Definite Shape and Volume Do NOT move fast enough to overcome attractions Each particle vibrates in place 2 Types of solids: Crystalline solids very orderly, three-dimensional arrangement of particles Iron, diamond, and ice Amorphous solids do not have a special arrangement Glass, rubber, and wax
Liquids Definite volume, but take shape of container Particles move fast enough to overcome some of the attraction between them Particles slide past each other Two special properties Surface tension force that acts on the particles at the surface of a liquid Viscosity liquid’s resistance to flow
Gases no definite shape or volume Particles move quickly and can break away completely from one another amount of empty space between gas particles can change States of matter
