What is VCE? It’s a coalition. That means it’s way more than a partnership – we have major commitments in engineering, development, solutions and best practices, and support. The coalition of Cisco and EMC, together with VMware has a purpose – to help our customers accelerate their journey. Whether that’s a journey of Virtualizing more, or a journey to private cloud. The three companies have a shared vision. We’ve aligned our technologies, and we’ve created a reference architecture called Vblock. We’ve also created blueprints and solutions to help people apply that technology to surpass their goals – from optimizing an SAP environment or rolling out VDI. And most significantly, we’ve created joint services to support Vblock and VCE solutions. All of that powering a shared partner ecosystem.
Here’s how the VCE coalition can help. These are the four key points of the announcement: The technology – that’s the Vblock The experience – the unified customer engagement, and single point of responsibility for maintenance and support The value – the added value of the VCE coalitions partner network And finally, related but separate, is the creation of a new, joint-venture company call Acadia

So What is the first completely integrated IT offering that combines best-of-breed networking, compute, storage, security, and management? This integrated system that service business applications, are purchased as Vblock Infrastructure Packages. They provide virtual blocks of functionality, that are available at the right price and the right size, secure, de-risked, and warranted. Vblock Infrastructure Packages completely virtualize HW infrastructure (network, compute, storage, hypervisor, management) Customers provide the existing O/S, Application, Data Base, and Data (back-up and restore) for existing or new implementations They deliver benefits for: A Rapid deployment model for virtualized infrastructure, to realize the value of business applications and information faster and quickly standardize across your environment A Reduction in the total cost of ownership with integrated, tested, and validated solutions with a s tandard infrastructure reduces management and maintenance costs. A Service Level driven approach in delivering computing with predictable performance & operational characteristics that aligns with how you deliver IT services and reduces risk They also provide unified support to streamline and accelerate problem resolution
Title Month Year Vblock accelerates virtualization across a broad range of applications. By virtualizing at Scale, IT is is standardized and simplified.
Vblocks provide predictable SLAs to the business, but also predictable levels of power and cooling, capacity, scalability, etc.
Title Month Year Drive Down Capital Expenses by up to 50% Reduce platform costs from higher server utilization, deeper platform density Limit new hardware (platform and ‘component’) purchases Pare software licensing, maintenance costs Scale back facilities-related expenditures (e.g. building, generators, cabling) Slash Operational Expenses by up to 40% Day-to-day task automation means fewer management FTEs Increased workloads per KW results in lower power & cooling costs Simplify the IT environment ‘ Pre-fabrication’ of all systems integration Standardization of software environment Fewer switches, NICs, servers and arrays mean less points of management Accelerate IT service delivery to the business Faster provisioning cycle times Continuous operation and availability means the business is never down VCE solutions enable the Virtualized Data Center and extension through choice of IT service providers Technology Innovations - Vblock Infrastructure Packages (VIPs) Vblock Infrastructure Packages are integrated IT offerings from the VCE coalition, combining best-of-breed networking, compute, storage, security, and management technologies with end-to-end vendor accountability – pre-integrated into a whole new way of delivering IT to business and validated to enable the creation of customized solution packages by the channel, partners, and ISVs. Rather than customers buying and assembling individual components, Vblock Infrastructure Packages are validated, secure, de-risked and warranted. The Vblock Infrastructure Packages roadmap includes a preconfigured infrastructure, which puts the benefits of private clouds within reach of small to medium-sized businesses. Vblock Infrastructure Packages have been designed and built for a broad range of specific customer implementations. Currently, there are three Vblock Infrastructure Packages available. Vblock 0 is designed for moderate VMs in a compact footprint, and provides for an entry-level configuration to meet the IT needs of small datacenters or organizations. It also offers a test and development platform for Partners and customers. Vblock 1 is designed for large VMs in a compact footprint, and provides for a mid-sized configuration to deliver a broad range of IT capabilities to organizations of all sizes. It is comprised of Cisco’s Unified Computing System (UCS), EMC’s CLARiiON CX4 storage system and VMware’s vSphere 4 platform. Vblock 2 is designed for massive VMs in a compact footprint, and provides for a high-end configuration that is completely extensible to meet the most demanding IT needs. It is comprised of the Cisco UCS, EMC’s Symmetrix V-Max storage system and VMware vSphere 4 platform.
Vblock Infrastructure Packages have been designed and built as a foundational infrastructure for IT. There are three Vblock Infrastructure Packages available. Vblock 2 is designed for massive virtual machines in a compact footprint, and provides for a high-end configuration that is completely extensible to meet the most demanding IT needs. It includes the Cisco UCS, the Cisco switches (MDS’s), EMC’s Symmetrix V-Max storage and VMware vSphere. Vblock 1 is the same configuration, but now we see CLARiiON CX4 in place the Symmetrix V-Max. Vblock 1 is still designed for large virtual machines in a compact footprint, and provides for a mid-sized configuration to deliver a broad range of IT capabilities to organizations of all sizes. Vblock 0 is designed for moderate VMs in a compact footprint, and provides for an entry-level configuration to meet the IT needs of small datacenters or organizations. It also offers a test and development platform for Partners and customers. Here you see, Unified Storage replacing the CX4, and also missing are the Cisco MDS’s, because were talking about network storage.

Cisco, EMC and VMware have developed a set of VCE professional services to enable private cloud. These services can help organizations transform their current IT infrastructures to accelerate strategic business impact. Using the Vblock architecture, VCE professional services will help define an organization’s cloud vision, a cloud strategy that aligns with business needs, an architecture and high-level design, with a plan to deploy the Vblock solution.
