2. • The Rwanda Genocide
started in April, 1994.
• It started when Juvénal
Habyarimana , the president
of the Republic of Rwanda
was assassinated.
• It ended in July, 1994.
• About 800,000 people were
killed.
3. • Rwanda is a small
country located in middle-
eastern Africa.
• Before the genocide, the
population was about 7
million.
• Rwanda was home to the
Hutu, Tutsi, and Twa.
• The Hutu population
made up 85%, Tutsi
made up 14%, and the
Twa made up 1%.
4. • Juvénal Habyarimana
was assassinated while
he was in a plane and it
was shot down.
• When Juvénal
Habyarimana was
assassinated, violence
imediately started.
• In the cover of the
violence, some Hutu
extremists planned to
destroy the entire Tutsi
civillian population.
5. • The Hutu extremists
were known as the
Akazu.
• Paul Kagame was the
leader of the Akazu.
• Many of the Akazu
held top position in
the national
government.
6. • The U.S. chose to ignore
the Rwanda Genocide.
• Bill Clinton, the president
at the time, didn’t want to
get involved.
• The U.S. had just pulled
troops from Somalia from
a disastrous
peacekeeping mission.
7. • The RPF is the Rwandan
Patriotic Front.
• It was created in 1987 by
the Tutsi refugee
diaspora in Uganda.
• The RPF took control of
the country by cutting off
supply routes and took
advantage of the
deteriorating social order.
8. • The French
supported the
genocide.
• The French helped
to train the
Rwandan militia.
• They were also
accused of murder
and hiding the
Tutsis.
9. • The Rwanda militia did
most of the killing, there
were about 30,000 of
them in the militia.
• Some of the weapons
that they used were
AK-47 assault rifles,
grenades, and machetes.
They used machetes over
guns because they were
cheaper.
• The whole massacre was
organized by the
government.
10. • Most of the thousands
of casualties were
Tutsi.
• The violence forced
the Tutsi, about
300,000 of them, to
flee to Uganda and
Burundi.
11. • The RPF ended the Rwanda Genocide.
• They took control of the capital of Kigali.
• The RPF took control of the government.
• After the RPF got the genocide over with, the
RPF became the dominant political party.
