Re: Project Reading Achievement through Listening
Dear Mr. Covey:
Stonewall Flanders Elementary proposal to the Lois Lensky Covey Foundation is for a program
designed to increase reading comprehension through listening to stories. The program is called
Project Reading Achievement through Listening. At Stonewall Flanders, we are committed to
providing opportunities for our students to succeed in academics as well as in life. We believe
that a love and enjoyment of reading contributes to this success. This program targets students at
Stonewall Flanders Elementary who are performing below average on standardized reading
assessments. Our goal is to increase student’s abilities to construct meaning, determine
relevance, and increase overall mastery of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills reading
competencies. This program has been designed to incorporate participation from everyone in the
Stonewall Flanders community of learners.
My proposal of $1,800 is needed to make Project Reading Achievement through Listening a
success. I appreciate and thank the Lois Lensky Covey Foundation for considering my proposal
to increase Stonewall Flanders Elementary students’ love of reading and increase in essential
reading comprehension skills.
Sincerely,
Collette Knight
Reading Intervention Teacher

4. Project Reading Achievement through Listening
Abstract
The mission of Harlandale Independent School District is “a family working together to provide
a high quality education where all students graduate to become productive and successful
citizens for the 21st century.” The acquisition of essential literacy skills is a primary component
to success in school and in life. There are students at Stonewall Flanders Elementary who are
struggling in the area of reading comprehension and are in danger of not reaching their highest
potential. My Project Reading Achievement through Listening program will help teachers,
parents, and staff, meet the literacy needs and maximize opportunities for parents to assist their
children in acquiring success in reading.
This proposal will help students raise reading achievement scores and further develop a love for
reading by incorporating the use of audio books for students to independently use. Through this
proposal teachers will receive the necessary training to assist in the implementation of reading
acquisition through the sharpening of listening comprehension skills. The librarian and reading
interventionist will discuss how parents can assist the literacy skills of their children with parents
in a welcoming and inviting atmosphere. Students will participate in fun activities and
celebrations centered around literacy and their own achievements.
The total cost of this program is $6,200.00. Of this amount, $.1,200.00 has been funded by our
local library budget. Administration and Harlandale Independent School District has funded the
training and transportation cost of $2,500.00. Prizes, party supplies, and print materials to
recognize student achievement and advertise books in audio format, costing $500.00 are funded
through the book fair fundraisers and the PTA. A total of $1,800.00 is requested for the
implementation of this program. It is my hope that through this program we can continue to
meet the literacy needs of our students and encourage LCFF to contact Collette Knight, Reading
