Using ‘I’ and ‘me’
The pronoun ‘I’
Use this pronoun when the sentence is about you. Be careful with this pronoun because
It sometimes changes the way the verb is written. For example:
Bob says: Jenny is going to the job centre.
Jenny says: I am going to the job centre.
The pronoun ‘me’
Use this pronoun when you are being acted upon by someone or something else. For
example:
Please call me about the job.
The text below is Jenny’s job history. Rewrite it as if you were Jenny, using personal pronouns.
You will need to put in 20 personal pronouns. Don’t forget to change the verb if necessary!
For example, your first sentence will be: ‘I am forty years old’.
Jenny is forty years old. Jenny has four children and Jenny is responsible for running the family
home. Jenny was a registered childminder. Jenny found this job gave Jenny the flexibility that
Jenny needed with a young family. Jenny wanted to give up childminding as Jenny wanted a new
challenge, to meet different people and gain more skills.
First Jenny studied for and gained Literacy and Numeracy qualifications. This made Jenny more
confident and Jenny began to apply for other jobs. The first job Jenny applied for was as a dinner
lady. A teacher told Jenny about it. This meant that Jenny was able to study and earn at the same
time.
Jenny has had several different jobs since then, including being a housekeeper at a local youth
hostel. This included being responsible for taking bookings and receiving payment from guests.
The manager was very pleased with Jenny and has offered to give Jenny a reference.
Jenny would like to continue with this kind of work as Jenny enjoys the fact that each day is
different.
