Casa Guatemala is an orphanage
that is home to up to 250
children
The children in their care are
either abused, abandoned and
orphaned children or children
who live in extreme poverty
from the surrounding isolated
communities

3. History of Casa Guatemala
• Founded during the Civil
war to care for
malnourished and
abandoned children in
the Capital City
• The abandoned and
orphaned victims of the
conflict became the
population of Casa
Guatemala making
education a top priority

4. Coming to Rio Dulce
• The tiny home in the
City was beyond
capacity and a larger
site was needed in order
to educate the children
• The decision was made
to find a rural site
where the children
could be cared for and
educated in a peaceful
and safe environment

5. Building the Children’s Village
• In 1987 the children’s village
was built in along the isolated
shores of the Rio Dulce to
serve the orphaned children
from the city and those from
the surrounding Mayan
Villages
• Casa Guatemala provides a
loving home, medical care and
an education to both groups
of children.

The Village consists of :
• Pre-kinder to 6th grade
School with 12 classrooms
• Houses for the boys, girls,
staff, teachers and
volunteers
• A medical clinic with
pharmacy
• 3.5 hectare school farm with
fruits, vegetables, pigs, fish
and turkies
• Parkland, playground and
playing fields

8. Education
• In 2010 Casa
Guatemala provided
for 298 children
• 24 students graduated
the 6th grade
• 18 were studying in
high schools outside of
the village
• Children from 11
different Mayan
communities came to
Casa Guatemala for
their education

9. The Clinic
• Full time Doctor on
site to care for the
children and nearby
villagers
• Full pharmacy with
donated medical
supplies
• Coordination of
Visiting Medical teams
to perform cleft lip
and palate operations

10. The Farm School
• Casa Guatemala
provides agricultural
training to the children
and incorporates the
farm into the
education program
• The farm provides
food for the kitchen
and products for the
store and hotel to sell
• Children learn
sustainable farming
practices

11. Self-Sustainability Projects
• Casa Guatemala runs
the Backpackers Hotel
and Restaurant
• Granja de los Niños is
a store in the local
market that sells goods
from the farm
• The Hotel and Store
provide funding to run
Casa Guatemala and
job training for older
students

• Casa Guatemala’s annual
budget is over $500,000
(USD)
• They receive no
Government funding
• They rely on donations
from individuals,
businesses and other
organizations
• 20% of the budget comes
from their businesses
• Tax deductable donations
can be made is the USA,
Canada and Spain
