1. Analysis and research on TOC for music magazines
This Analysis shows the key concepts to identify why they are so popular and how the layouts are
aesthetically effective. I chose to research of the magazine Billboard. This magazine is overall very
informative. It has page up and information which helps the readers to look their way through the
magazine. In the typography the title are in black and white. The clashing colours allow the title to
stand out
The page number below the pictures
makes it easier for the reader to
make their way through the
magazine. The images are a source
of information which allows the
reader to see who the artist is and it
also promotes the artist.
The number in the middle of the row
shows the clear layout for a reader to
find the page. There is also a colour
code which places the page numbers
is order. Each column has a sub-
heading which shows the simple but
effective way to attracting the reader
immediately to the contents page
rather than looking straight into the
magazine
The content page is layout out
effectively. The images are based on
the right side which context and the
left side has the page numbers and
what is inside the magazine. The
largest image on the page of the
artist (bent on the floor) suggests
that there will be a double page
spread and more information on
her. Placing a bigger image is key to
represent the genre of the magazine
as well as the artist
The symbol ‘No1’ immediately captures the reader’s attention. It shows the reader that the
magazine is music central and doesn’t focus on one specific genre. This is a very good way
representing what is inside the magazine because if the reader doesn’t like to read as much there is a
diverse variety of images. At the bottom of the page there is the link of the online music magazine
which includes many upcoming events. The No1 charts is extremely helpful to any music reader as if
the buyer is interested in the top of the charts they could simply just go to the content page to find
out what’s going on.
The contents page still follows
the normal conventions of a
magazine and includes the
page number and website URL.
Including page numbers in the
contents page makes it clear
for the reader to find other
pages based on the
information the content page
gives us
The information along the left side of the
contents page is really useful as it helps
the reader to clearly find their way
through the magazine. It also grips their
attention as all the important
information of music is featured in the
left hand side.
On the left side of content page the magazine still follows
the convention of placing the website of the music
magazine. This simple convention is also a reminder for
the reader to access the magazine online or from the
print.
