COMPARISONS
As…..As….. (eşitlik belirtir)
We use as + adjective/adverb + as to make comparisons when the
things we are comparing are equal in some way:
• The world’s biggest bull is as big as a small elephant.
• The weather this summer is as bad as last year. It hasn’t stopped
raining for weeks.
• You have to unwrap it as carefully as you can. It’s quite fragile.
So/such
As many/as much
As many + countables = as many books as
e.g. He doesn't have as many collection stamps as you have.
As much + uncountables = as much rain as
e.g. Jim doesn't eat as much chocolate as I do! That's impossible!
Too +adjective+ to do sth
Too much/many + noun
Too much/many + noun
much too much
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0V0LOv1v_4
Describing an excessive quantity : = MUCH TOO + ADJECTIVE
e.g. This car is much too expensive for me to buy…
e.g. This case is much too heavy : you can't carry it!
In this construction, ‘MUCH’ has here the function
of ‘increasing’, amplifying the adverb ‘too'; it is equivalent
to ‘far too heavy’.
- There is even a 'funny' expression : ‘much too much’. It
describes a real excess or exaggeration !
e.g. He’s eaten much too much today… He’d better start a diet!
Adjective/Adverb + Enough
• The adverb ENOUGH is used with an adjective (1), an adverb (2)
or a verb (3). In those three cases, it is placed AFTER the adjective,
the adverb or the verb. It is often used in a negative clause.
e.g. 1 : I won't let him go out tonight ; He's not mature enough.
e.g. 2 : You didn't run fast enough to escape and were
imprisoned immediately !
e.g. 3 : I haven't slept enough ... I'm really exhausted ...
* Placed after an adjective, it is often followed by an infinitive :
e.g. Don't tell him your secret ... He's not old enough to understand.
* ENOUGH used with a noun is a determiner and therefore, it
precedes the noun.
e.g. There isn't enough tea left ... I'll run to the shop to buy
some ...
* ' Enough is enough! '
ADJECTIVE + ENOUGH => 'rich enough'
ADVERB + ENOUGH => 'fast enough'
VERB + ENOUGH => 'not eaten enough'
but : ENOUGH + NOUN => 'enough patience'
Adjective/Adverb + Enough
