New studies from different researchers have found that the main ingredient in watercress, Phenethyl isothiocyanate, works effectively in fight different cancers including prostate cancer, breast cancer.

Watercress, a tiny plant which is very cheap to buy, has been shown to have powerful anti-cancer
properties in several recent studies.

As the numbers of cancer diagnosis are constantly increasing, researchers all over the world are
conducting numerous studies to find a way to better fight back the disease. Several studies have shown
watercress has many anticancer properties against cancers of breast, lungs, colon, brain, as well as
prostate cancer, and others.
Some Portuguese researchers at the Institute of Molecular Medicine (IMM), along with the public
hospital of the University of Lisbon and the University of Reading, United Kingdom (UK), have discovered
antioxidant properties of watercress on cancer patients. The research was conducted on 200 patients.
The same study also reveals that consumption of watercress could increase the resistance of the DNA of
healthy cells of patients treated with radiotherapy. In addition, consuming the plant has the ability to
increase the resistance of cells to oxidative stress that can be caused by several factors, such as pollution
or tobacco smoke.
The study helps the researchers to find more benefits from this tiny plant that they would not imagine.
For instance, it is found that the beneficial effects of watercress may prevent the growth of cancer cells,
even in patients with metastatic cancers. When consumed regularly, in normal quantity (80 g or more),
along with the conventional cancer treatment, watercress helps reduce the negative effects of the
chemotherapy and radiation therapy. "We felt we had to test this product to improve diagnosis of the
disease, but also to increase patients’ resistance to treatment by decreasing the toxicity of the therapy
on healthy cells," said Isabel Monteiro Grillo.
In other recent studies published on US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health (NCBI),
other researchers have found Phenethyl isothiocyanate (PEITC) and sulforaphane (SFN) are two great
enemies of malignant cells. Watercress is an exceptionally rich source of PEITC. Dietary phenethyl
isothiocyanate was shown to restrain the survival of cancer cells and decrease the formation activity of
new blood vessels into existing malignant tumors. This leads researchers to conclude its potential anti-
cancer effects not only among individuals who want to prevent the disease but also cancer patients who
want to reduce or stop the reproduction of cancer cells.
Watercress is rich in many important substances such as vitamin A, C and B. Fresh watercress is also a
good source of many minerals including but not limited to iron, magnesium, zinc, sulfur, calcium, and
potassium fluoride (in its natural form). When consumed raw, in juice form (a power juicer is required),
