The 100 sq. meter school can be built on a 14m x 14m plot at a cost of approx. $17K - $25K.vEach school unit allows for 48 to 60 students and 4 teachers per session. Most camp schools are doing double shifts so this allows a capacity of approx. 100 kids per school.
2. Prefabricated Deployable Self-Build Shelters for Syrian Refugees // Housing
In 2013 we began designing a self built housing system that could be assembled in an urban or rural setting for less than
$1500 per home. Working with Pilosio Spa in Udine, Italy and persian designer and natural building expert Pouya Khazael
we built and tested a series of prototype structures. This included a clustering system for extended families.
!
From this planning exercise we began to experiment with building a quick medical or educational structure for camps.
3. Prefabricated Deployable Self-Build Shelters for Syrian Refugees // Transitional School
Set around a tree the school is built in a
courtyard design and made from light
metal frames that are infilled with local
materials.The structure includes
natural ventilation and rainwater
catchment. Solar panels can be
attached to the system to create an off
grid school.
!
Below are test blocks that can be
perforated with windows and doors. By
connecting two blocks we can create a
simple classroom.
4. Prefabricated Deployable Self-Build Shelters for Syrian Refugees // Transitional School
The 100 sq. m school can be
built on a 14m x 14m plot at a cost
of approx. 17K - 25K USD. The later
price incorporates solar panels for
a complete off grid solution.
!
Each school unit allows for 48 to 60
students and 4 teachers per
session. Most camp schools are
doing double shifts allowing approx
100 kids per school.
5. Prefabricated Deployable Self-Build Shelters for Syrian Refugees // Transitional School
When the Syrian conflict is
resolved each school can be
dismantled and redeployed within
Syria. We believe that the
humanitarian community needs to
work on structures that allow for
the continuity of care and are
building equity within the affected
country.
!
Eventually this system can be
manufactured and built by the host
country. Once a roadmap for
returning home begins we can then
use the existing structure as a
transitional school for returning
refugees.
!
Assembly and Redeployment
should take less than 3 days per
school.
