3. Bouquet for Mom
• Flowers – their fragrance, vivid
colours and intricately and
delicately arranged petals –
remind me of my mother.
• I attribute my artistic talent to
my mother and thank her for the
love, appreciation, and
encouragement she has given
me over the years.
4. Father Nurture
• The approving smile of my Dad
the day I had to tie his shoelaces
will always be a bittersweet
memory.
• Like this dying ornamental palm
tree that was still bearing fruit,
my Dad continued to be the
gentle, loving, nurturing parent
even when Alzheimer’s Disease
ravaged his mind and body.
5. Paddler in the Marsh
• I let my imagination roam as I
recalled some of the stories he
shared about his kayaking trips
over the years.
• As I painted, I thought of two
ways in which the painting could
be interpreted:
• Terror or
• Tranquility.
6. Paddler in the Marsh
• Le tableau pourrait-il
représenter la fuite précipitée
loin de la rencontre tendue sur
le territoire de l’orignale ?
• Non, pas du tout, m’a rassuré
Bob en voyant le tableau achevé.
• Tranquility: The painting
‘Paddler in the Marsh’ is the
interpretation of the picture that
was taken by his friend as Bob
“rowed his boat, gently down
the stream,” in the tranquil
waters near Franklin Island in
Georgian Bay, far away from the
moose territory in Algonquin
and even further away from the
grind of city life.
7. The Land of my Birth
• These paintings of Jamaica’s flora,
fauna, and natural beauty were created
with much emotion, and they stir up
feelings of nostalgia and pride, every
time I see them.
8. Grace-full Sunflowers
• On the last day of summer, as I looked at these
sunflowers, an intriguing combination of themes came
to mind. These beauties bloomed in the garden of the
Grace Anglican Church in the Eastern Township of
Sutton, Québec.
• As I created this painting, I reminisced on my prison
visit, on justice and on God’s grace, freely given to all,
regardless of who we are and what we have done.
• Who knew that sunflowers blooming against the side
wall of a church named ‘Grace’ could be so rich in
symbolism and meaning?
11. Pine Tree on Lake Algonquin
• The only time I felt fear while I was painting was when I was in
Algonquin Park, Ontario.
• (A park ranger) recounted some recent bear sightings in a
nearby campground.
• Visualising a possible encounter with a bear in my plein-air art
studio, I asked if diving into the lake and swimming away from
the bear was a possible escape route.
• She countered by saying that bears are very good swimmers.
• That was enough to scare me as I nervously continued to paint
the pine tree. I painted this pine tree very, very quickly and left
the area, just as quickly, and without incident.
12. Love and gratitude
• This painting is aptly named ‘Love and Gratitude’, recurring
themes symbolized in its subjects. I chose this painting to
grace the cover of this book in appreciation for the many
blessings in my life.
