5. Don’t forget the mass market! While the number of smartphones as a proportion of mobile phones is set to increase, from 23% of all mobile phone shipments in 2011 to 37% in 2016, Ovum still expects non-smartphones to number 2.3 billion in 2016 JavaME is the most widespread mobile application runtime on mobile phones (as reflected by its position on Figure 1). According to Oracle, the company which now maintains the Java technology, there are currently 3 billion mobile phones that currently support JavaME, and 1 billion of these are from Nokia alone.
