4. Weight Assigned by USGBC by Category
LEED rating is determined by earning points for
fulfilling requirements in the following six areas:
1.Sustainable Sites
2.Water Efficiency
3.Energy and Atmosphere Design
4.Materials and Resources
5.Indoor Environmental Quality
6.Innovation and Design Process

13. Stormwater Runoff and Parking Lot Pollution
Where buildings are located near water sources it is important to mitigate
the effects of stormwater runoff and parking lot pollution.
Pervious pavers. Pervious pavers installed in the parking lot to allow
stormwater to percolate into the ground and insure that stormwater runoff
volumes are/were the same as “predevelopment levels.”
RNV-13
15. Detention Ponds and Underground Separation Tanks
You can create detention ponds to capture runoff.
Underground separation tanks can be installed to filter sand and oil from
stormwater prior to its release into the city’s stormwater system.

17. Goal: Minimize energy used for heating, cooling and lighting.
Summer. In the summer a night flush vent system replaces the hot air
of the day with cool night time air.
RNV-17
18. Radiant heat system. A radiant heat system using the highest
efficiency commercial boilers and ceiling mounted radiant panels is used
to warm buildings on cold days.
RNV-18
19. Ceiling mounted radiant panels is used to warm buildings on cold days.
R30 insulation in the roof.
RNV-19
20. R12 insulation in the walls retain heat in the winter and keep
buildings cool in the summer
Roof mounted sky lights and smoke vents provide natural light to
the interior and workspace.
RNV-20
21. Photo sensors and motion detectors are used to shut off lights when
area lighting is not necessary.
RNV-21
23. Recycled materials in walls and floors. Concrete with recycled
content flyash for walls and floors.
See www.greenbuilder.com/sourcebook/Flyash.html
Interior columns and roof structures. Recycled steel for interior
columns and roof structures.
RNV-23
24. Use local materials. Distance from building site. How far were
materials shipped from? X% of the building materials and products used
were manufactured within 500 miles of the construction site.
X% of the construction materials derived from within 500 miles of
the construction.
RNV-24
25. FSC certified wood. Nearly 100% of the wood used in construction
was FSC certified — meaning that it was certified as sustainable by the
Forest Stewardship Council.
Low or No VOC finishes and carpets. The finishes and carpets
contained low or no VOCs with no urea formaldehyde resins.
