I
was
chosen
to
parTcipate
in
the
Summer
InsTtute
of
Literary
and
Cultural
Studies
at
Wheaton
College
for
the
month
of
June.
While
at
the
insTtute,
I,
along
with
the
nine
other
members
of
my
cohort,
engaged
in
a
graduate
level
seminar
on
theory,
parTcipated
in
a
symposium,
visited
various
Ivy
league
graduate
schools,
aended
a
GRE
prep
course,
and
prepared
materials
to
apply
for
graduate
school
in
the
future.
This
program,
a
Mellon-‐funded

promote
diversity
in
the
English
field,
was
one
of
the
best
experiences
of
my
academic
career,
and
will
conTnue
to
be
valuable
to
me
as
I
conTnue
my
career
in
academia.

This
summer
I
had
the
joy
of
experiencing
the
growth
of
several
of
my
passions
while
teaching
piano
lessons,
voice
lessons,
and
English
on
the
island
of
San
Cristobal,
Galapagos.
As
a
volunteer
with
Performing
Arts
Abroad
and
Projects
Abroad
Ecuador,
I
spent
my
days
teaching
children
K-‐12
and
forming
close
relationships
with
the
other
international
volunteers
there.
I
lived
with
a
Spanish-‐speaking
host
family,
Hinding
a
second
home
with
some
of
the
most
caring
people
I
have
ever
met.
I
also
had
the
distinct
pleasure
of
receiving
my
PADI
Open
Water
scuba
diving
certiHication.
Teaching
piano,
voice,
and
English
abroad
conHirmed
my
passion
for
teaching,
further
preparing
me
to
pursue
a
career
in
education.
I
am
forever
indebted
to
the
Brown
Foundation
for
making
these
summer
experiences
a
reality.
