2. I selected my main image
from the photoshoot I had
before creating the poster.
I wanted the image to
show the actor using a
direct mode of address
which would engage the
audience and also to be
similar to the one used in
the poster but not the
same.
The use of direct mode of
address creates a
relationship with the
audience and makes them
more comfortable and in
turn pushes them to buy.
3. I wanted to create the same
kind of image as on my poster
which would create synergy
between my products. So the
next thing I did was to add
some effects to the image.
First I decreased the saturation
as I was going to be creating
a bad quality video camera
still – type image again and so
this would decrease the
colout intensity.
Next I added a gradient map
from black to white with a hint
of green again, making it look
like it had come from an old
video camera.
I also decreased the contrast,
something I didn’t do on the
poster but this would add to
the bad quality effect.
4. Just like with the
poster, I added
scanlines and noise to
make the image look
as if it had been taken
from a bad quality, old
video camera. This fits
in with the style of the
film and creates a
“house style” for the
film itself. (Zoomed to
show detail)
5. Next I created the
masthead by using that
of a pre-existing product.
I took the main logo for
the title and transferred it
onto my cover (top
image).
I then added some extra
elements to it which are
not the same as the real
masthead. These were
the website, a tagline
and the date (bottom
image).
6. Next I used the internet to
find a simple barcode and
placed this in the bottom
right corner. I have found in
most magazines, this is
where the barcode is
situated and also thought it
would be also best for my
magazine as this keeps it
out of the way of the main
features of the cover.
I then added a price which
would go next to this. Both
of these elements are
hugely important parts.
7. Next I added the main
coverline which was the title
of the movie. This is the main
article featured in the
magazine and so needs to be
the biggest focus on the cover
as the main image is also part
of this. I used the actual logo
from the film, also used in the
poster which again creates a
synergy between products.
Then I added another
coverline to go with this which
is kind of like a tagline to this
story, this gives the audience
a small insight into the article
and makes them want to read
more.
8. The next step was to add
more coverlines which
would state more stories
featured in the magazine.
These are eye-catching
while not being too
bold/bright that they take
away the focus from the
main coverline as that is
the selling point.
I have differed the fonts
used in the coverlines
which was one of the
conventions I found when
analysing magazines.
I have tried to use things
that would encourage a
fanbase to buy the
magazine.
9. After adding extra
coverlines, I felt there was
something missing. When
analysing magazines, I
often found there was a
story, or features of the
magazine written across
the very top or very bottom
of the page and so I
added this by putting a big
plus sign to mean
extra, and writing the
names of popular and
successful horror films. This
would help to attract more
people and a wider
audience to the magazine.
10. The last part I added was the
puff. This is used to attract the
audiences attention to either
exclusive information or a free
gift or something similair.
I added mine in a contrasting
colour to the rest of the page to
attract audience attention to
an extra feature in the
magazine. This could be
considered a USP because after
seeing the page they might
think this is good, but then be
attracted to this extra part, look
closely and this may be the part
that sways them to buy it.
This was also a common
convention I found throughout
film magazine analysis.
11. This is my final magazine
cover as part of my
promotional package. I
believe this has been a
success as it is exactly
like my original plan.
Also, this synergises well
with both the poster and
the film trailer.
I think this cover would
attract an audience to
both buy the magazine
and go and see the film
which overall means this
must have been a
success.
