Review the homework regarding :
(10 MIN) HOMEWORK: Give 2nd scenario as homework (this is about evoking Sustain Talk and Creating Discord) – Craft the strategy and skills for this scenario – they then need to propose how this could be changed – how would you arrive at a change goal. Discuss Homework – With Intention:
Processing 2nd Scenario and Dialogue
Identifying Sustain Talk/Creating Discord
Crafting New Responses – Engaging Client and Evoking Change talk
Begin Heart of this week’s presentation with this question. Have students look at their own thoughts on this and then weave in the importance of identifying and evoking change talk before moving to planning. Also key importance of strengthening and reinforcing evoked change talk with intention , again setting stage for planning . This is one where research or research articles may be helpful to solidify points and “buy in” by students . Jenny has stock slides on this research per her report
The planting begins with OARS and working with ambivalence. The cultivating is when we are listening for change talk and/or evoking change talk. The growing are strategies of strengthening and reinforcing CT via use of OARS - Based on The DARN C”s ……..Then the “harvesting” part of MI -talk about the DARN CAT – change that added commitment , activation, taking steps.
Process the importance of picking up cues from client that involve the DARN C’s including desire, ability, reason, and need to change. Also talk about the importance of reinforcing through reflecting statements these cues.
Desire- Client expresses desire to change “ I am tired of being tired “
Ability- Client expresses ability to change “ I feel as if I am finally ready to quit “
Reason – Client expresses reason to change “ I want a different life “
Need – Client expresses need to change “ I am going to lose my marriage if don’t quit
Also how to effectively listen for cues and bookmark these internally while remembering to later at more therapeutic weave them back into conversation .
How to use EARS effectively when responding to emergent CT
