Start a Blog
• While Twitter is great for putting out quick ideas and communicating simple concepts, itʼs hard to beat blogging for creating a platform for your message
• Journeyman Filmʼs blog is Mathew Welshʼs personal insight into business, filmmaking and his experiences
• The days that I blog, I get 3-4 times as much traffic as the days when I donʼt post anything

• Twitter is generally about informal communication
• The first thing most people do when they are followed by someone else is to check out their profile
• Put up a real picture of yourself
• Link to your site or blog
• Try to make your bio real, maybe a bit humorous
• Donʼt forget your location
• Youʼll get more real followers this way

• Weʼve done a bit of work collaboratively over the years as well
• But now, weʼre competition, his company Violet Communications does pretty much what we do

• Itʼs like if you go into two competing stores and one bad mouthes the other. Who are you going to buy from?

• If youʼre trying to market to university students, realize that you canʼt be genuine without bringing on some help
• Killam Properties, a client of ours hired Colour who brought in Picnicface for this brilliant campaign
• results: Lots of traffic for Killam, and a legitimate increase in student bookings, plus Killam is now “cool”

• If you make a mistake, or if you got something wrong, make sure you apologize
• Youʼll get more respect if you do and youʼll show that you are indeed, human.
• Another good example of this is how Maple Leaf handled the listeriosis ordeal last year

Allow Comments. Accept Criticism.
• One of the most powerful things about a blog is that people can offer their thoughts on everything you say.
• Positively AND negatively.
• This is a good thing though. Because people are talking about you whether you like it or not, but if they take the time to comment on your blog, at least you can address it there.

• Zappos has a return policy for their shoes
• When this woman got an email form them after her mom died from cancer, she replied saying her mom had passed and she hadnʼt had time
• They replied and said they were dispatching UPS to pick them up so she didnʼt have to
• Then, they sent her a bouquet of flowers
• Imagine!
